Basement Painting Tips-Don of all Trades

Basement Painting Tips-Don of all Trades
Photos provided by Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Painting your basement  can have a major effect on how the space looks and feels. It’s astonishing what a fresh coat of  paint can do when attempting to spruce up a room, and your basement no different.  Unfortunately,  bringing a basement to life  can be somewhat more difficult than other rooms in your home.

Numerous basements are just utilized as storage areas, but wouldn’t it be wonderful  to use your space as a home office, a basement gym, or a room your whole family can enjoy?

Below are some photos of a recent basement project our team at Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services  completed along with our 6 painting tips that we hope will inspire  and help to make your basement a friendly and happy place.

Tip 1-  Use Lighter Paint Hues

This isn’t as complicated  as it sounds.  Locate the places that get a lot of natural or artificial light and paint these areas with lighter colours. The whole point  here is to focus on the areas that are already accepting light and keeping the lighter paint colours  out of the darker regions of your basement.

Tip 2- Use Rich Colours

Applying rich colours will help give your basement an “open” feel. Numerous homeowners aim to achieve this with light colours, for example, white or yellow, however using a richly saturated paint choice like a Benjamin Moore Interior Latex Pearl Base Paint in Whale Gray Colour code#  2134-40   can be more effective than choosing an poorly saturated yellow paint as an option.

Tip 3- Reduce the Number of Colours

Using  a large number of colours can overwhelm your room. Interior  designers suggest utilizing the 60-30-10 standard to shield your room from having an excessive number of colours.

  • 60% of the room should be the dominant color.
  • 30% should be the secondary color.
  • 10% should be used for accents.

For this project we made it simple. 2 colours were chosen to paint this basement space. A Pearl base Whale Grey hue  for the walls and Semi Gloss White Interior paint for the ceilings and trim. White window treatments were used as accents to finish off this now organized, fresh and clean space.

Tip 4- Add Extra Lighting

Light helps give the illusion that a room is bigger (and much cleaner) than the actual space. You can easily create this effect  by incorporating a table or floor lamp.  Track lighting or lights suspended from your ceilings can also be a simple and affordable  approach to include extra lighting.

Installing recessed lighting can involve more work and more expensive as an option however,  it adds a updated modern look and feel to a room.

A basic and affordable solution to expand the light in your basement space is through the use of mirrors.  Mirrors help “ricochet” the light around the room and give the illusion the space is larger.

For this basement painting project, the home owner decided to keep all  original light fixtures and pot lights but decided to replace existing light bulbs  with Ecosmart 60W  Soft White  LED Light BulbsThe EcoSmart A19 8.5-Watt LED Light Bulb can be used to replace a traditional 60W incandescent A19 light bulb. This LED light bulb has an output of 800 Lumens and can last up to 10,000 hours, saving you up to $56.65 per bulb over the bulb’s life. The bulb is designed for indoor use and features an A-line shape and medium base. EcoSmart A19 bulbs are perfect for your living room, bedroom, kitchen or any place in your home where you would use a standard incandescent light bulb. These bulbs give off a lot of light and were the perfect solution to  brighten up this basement.

Tip 5- Select A Glossy Finish

Because basements have a tendency to be damp, glossy finishes are an excellent paint choice and more suited to resist stains and moisture.  Remember to make sure your walls are smooth and clean before you apply the paint as glossier finishes tend to show imperfects more than other paint finishes.

Tip 6- Use Concrete Paint on Concrete Walls

Using concrete paint is a little different than regular wall paint because it generally requires more paint to cover the surface. When painting concrete surfaces keep in mind that it can take over a week to finish the job however, your concrete walls will be protected with the proper finish.

Sheet Vinyl Flooring-Don Of All Trades

Vinyl is a great flooring preference  that fits every décor and budget. Vinyl floors are an affordable option that offers style, durability, and long-lasting performance. When installed correctly over the proper sub-flooring, vinyl is extremely resistant to dents, scratches, and stains.
Vinyl Flooring-Don Of All Trades photo 2[2] photo 3[2] photo 4[1]

Four more great reasons for choosing Vinyl Flooring  listed below.

Upkeep

Vinyl flooring is relatively easy to care for. You have to make sure that grit and dirt are kept swept free to maintain the surface of the floor. Then you can use a damp mop and an approved vinyl floor cleaner to remove stains.

Comfort

Vinyl flooring does not get cold in the winter, and is generally soft beneath your feet. Some vinyl sheets and tiles have a padded layer that can make walking on these floors even more pleasurable.

  Economical

At the low range, vinyl can cost as little as fifty cents per square foot. However higher end premium vinyl materials can cost as much as ten dollars a square foot. The difference in price is determined by the quality of the tile, and the design options found in the surface.

 Water Resistant

A well installed vinyl floor is almost impervious to water penetration, making this the perfect material for use in a bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, or other high moisture space in the home.

At Don Of All Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services, our Home Improvement Specialists,  recommended  this type of sheet vinyl to install in the bathroom for two reasons.

Reason Number 1:

The first reason was the concern of a potential “tripping hazard.” Our client has difficulty lifting  his feet high off the ground. The original  bathroom floor tiles were popping off and the  risk of potentially  falling was extremely high. With sheet vinyl you greatly reduce of trips and falls.

Reason Number 2:

And the second reason being that because he is an older gentleman, this  sheet vinyl flooring  would be a warmer flooring alternative in the winter,  giving him more comfort when he utilizes the bathroom facilities.

Exterior Painting-Getting Ready To List Your Home

If you are considering selling your home there are few  home improvement projects that have as great an impact as a new coat of exterior paint on your home.  Modifying or at the very  least,  refreshing the exterior paint on your home completely revitalize the look of your home and makes it more attractive to potential buyers.

It’s the first thing buyers notice when viewing a home and exterior paint also…

  • adds value
  • is attractive to a buyer
  • painting is a relatively inexpensive repair that goes a long way
  • fresh coat of paint goes a long way with buyers
  • paint and flooring are 2 areas that buyers highly evaluate when home shopping

Getting this house ready to list.

Fresh paint adds curb-appeal. Even if your home is well-taken care of,  chipped paint and a not so well-taken care of exterior could give potential buyers the illusion that the interior / structure is not well taken care of and scare people away.

pic 7

That being said, if you’re planning to put your house on the market in the near future, you’ll also want to consider which shades will attract the broadest range of buyers.

Bathroom Floor and Shower Remodel

pic monkey bathroom

 Our Complimentary In Home Consultation

  • Client addressed issues of water leaking from the shower into to the kitchen ceiling and causing damage to all the drywall
  • Client was concerned as  to why all of the ceramic floor tiles were breaking in the bathroom.

Initial Review Upon Inspection

Photos courtesy of Don Of All Trades

picmonkey 2  picmonkey 3

Upon my inspection I found that these issues were  caused by an improperly built shower base. The previous contractor had laid the ceramic for the shower floor directly on top of the subfloor without any water proofing membrane or concrete. They also used 12-inch tiles for the floor and it’s almost impossible to create a slope for the water to go to the waste drain using that size tile.

The end result was that the tile and grout failed, causing the plywood to absorb the water like a sponge. When it got to a point where the subfloor couldn’t take in any more water it started to leak onto the kitchen ceiling. Not only did it damage the ceiling it also spread from the subfloor in the shower to the subfloor in the bathroom causing the tile to crack and the toilet to move because the wood completely was rotted.

Solution To Correcting This Problem

The original bathroom flooring  was removed. New plywood wood was installed, screening was applied as well as a scratch coat. Our client decided on a  ceramic for their floor tile.  A new toilet and baseboard were also added to this bathroom.

Backer board with a built-in rubber membrane on the outer layer was installed in the shower. All joints were sealed with fiberglass mesh tape. A thin set mortar was applied to fill in all the joints in order to maintain a good tight water seal.

The original shower pan  was removed. This was replaced by installing new 1 inch plywood on top of the sub floor.  A layer of concrete was added to from  a new base foundation.  Once the concrete had cured, a rubber membrane was installed on top of the concrete. This stage of the floor was completed by adding a final top coat  of concrete.

Our client’s choice of tile was a  ceramic  that was installed on the walls in a subway tile pattern to give it a unique and professional look. Once the tiling process was completed on all shower walls and floor, grout was applied to the tiles. The original fixtures and glass shower door were re installed.

As a professional in the home improvement business, I am extremely fortunate to be able to work with incredible clients. This project involved the  remodeling of their existing bathroom that unfortunately had suffered severe water damage.   Our team at Don Of All Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services was able to  complete this project on time and within the client’s budget! Did we mention our client was extremely happy?

Tip:  Home owners considering hiring a professional to complete a bathroom remodel should take into account that this project could take up to a week or more to complete depending on the scope of the work. Plan accordingly and communicate with your contractor on what the entire bathroom remodel process will entail and be prepared for surprises your contractor may find along the way  i.e.: water damage, faulty wiring, mold etc.  You may have to temporarily use the second bathroom in your home during the remodeling process. So please be patient and work together with your contractor.

Project- Door Installation By Don Of All Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

picmonkey 4

It always makes me chuckle when a client that has never installed a door believes that ” A Door Is Just A Door Right?” “It should be a breeze and shouldn’t take long at all.” I am here to tell you, yes it should be a breeze  but in a lot of cases, it’s not that simple.

This door install was a challenge but at the end of the day, it got done with fantastic results!

pic monkey 1

For this project, the original front door including the storm door and brick molding was removed. The original framing around the door was also removed because the home  owner  ordered  a new door with  brick to brick measurement’s . Interesting fact: when the homeowner originally took measurements for the new door, what he received was a brand new beautiful front door that was 3 1/2 inches too short.

Tip: If you’re thinking of replacing a door in  your home and you feel uncomfortable about taking the measurements, have the installer come and take them for  you. In most cases this cost is included in the purchase price of the door. This saves you TIME, MONEY and  AGRIVATION.

picmonkey 2

So here’s a perfect example of trouble shooting skills that  saves the day.

Due to the fact the door was 3 1/2 inches to short, we had to build out the frame to make it fit. The new door was put in the  opening and shimmed in order for it to stay in place.

picmonkey 3

Next we leveled and plumed the door making sure that it was square. Once this part of the process was completed, we then moved forward with installing all the hardware  and did a test  by opening and closing the door to make sure it worked  correctly.

Next step, we installed the brick molding on the exterior of the door. Exterior caulk was added and applied all around the brick mold and checking that all gaps were properly sealed.

picmonkey 4

In this case, we didn’t have to apply the low expansion spray foam or interior and the homeowner was going to do this part himself.

Yes We Install Them!!!

Don of All Trades installs Low-Flow Irrigation systems for your home or business. As more communities face water shortages, many people are noticing how simple and practical these low-flow irrigation systems can be. Once these systems are installed they not only conserve water, they save a lot of work. Tired of spending your time winding and unwinding hoses, attaching and moving sprinklers, and so on? Also known as micro-irrigation and low-flow watering systems these use much less later than conventional methods. They distribute water close to individual plants, so water goes only where it’s needed. There’s so many attachments to choose from to make this system work for you. Imagine enjoying your BBQ steak dinner outdoors while you’re watering your gardens at the same time! And YES we install them!
