2015 Helping Hands Charity BBQ for Hope

When people work together great things can happen!

For over a month we have been planning and organizing a charity bbq event to help raise funds and  donated items benefiting Herizon House, a not for profit organization  who provide  free confidential services 24 hours a day and provide a place of safety, support and empowerment for abused women and their children. Herizon House is committed to ending the cycle of abuse and violence in the community.

Yesterday was the day of our 2015 Helping Hands Charity BBQ for Hope Event and although considering the possibility making the difficult decision of cancelling  and rescheduling, we decided to move forward with hosting it as planned.

Despite the rain, wind and cooler than normal weather and a very well- built tarp for shelter, we are very grateful to those who volunteered, attend and donated items to make this event a huge success!

We are dedicating this blog  to these individuals who have worked incredibly hard at helping us  make a difference in our community.  This event is just an example of how when people work together, great things can happen!

We are a dedicated team of individuals focused on continuing to find ways to make our communities better and helping those who in difficult times, need help the most.

Flag Stone Step Repair

Photos by Don Of All Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Flagstone steps, walkways and patios need occasional maintenance and repair, usually to renew the mortar between the stones or in the case of stones laid without mortar, to level those that have tilted or sunk.

The work is not complicated, but it can be strenuous if moving stones is required.

Areas of cracked mortar between flagstones should be repaired. (Individual cracks, unless they are several inches long, can usually be left alone.)

Moisture seeping into cracks and repeatedly freezing and thawing will eventually cause further cracking, and weeds sprouting in the fissures can do the same thing.

Below are  before and after photos of a recent project our team at Don Of All Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services completed.

Glass & Stone Mosiac Kitchen Backsplash Tile Install By: Don Of All Trades

There’s nothing more exciting than adding  upgrades to your home like this Glass and Stone Mosaic Kitchen Backslash install our team at Don Of All Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services recently completed for our client.  These home owners picked their own choice of colour and style of tile. I have to say, the end result is SPECTACULAR!

Product:  Glass and Stone Mosaic Wall Tiles

Up for a DIY challenge? Here’s some important steps to remember BEFORE you start the installation process.

Important Information To Remember

  • Make sure the surface is level and clean prior to installation.
  • If applying mosaic tile on gypsum, it is important to apply a coat of primer prior to beginning your mosaic wall tile installation.
  • Always check all the purchased boxes of tiles before starting. I have been in situations where clients thought what they purchased was all the same tile when in fact what they brought home was 3 different types of tile.  This step saves everyone involved  a lot of time and aggravation.
  • Inspect each tile prior to installation.
  • When installing tiles, mix and match tiles from different cartons for a natural look.
  • If you are installing mosaic wall tiles in a shower, it is necessary to install a waterproof membrane.
  • Install any trim or profile strips before installing the mosaic wall tile.
  • Modified thin-sets are generally appropriate for mosaic wall tile installations. Pre-mixed thin-sets are not appropriate for bathroom installations, and should not be used for mosaics featuring glass wall tiles.
  • Follow all manufacturer’s instructions when applying modified thin-set and grout.

So Here’s What We Did

  1. First step was to come up with a plan of where these tiles were going to be placed on the walls.

With the plan in place, we began our kitchen back-splash install by adding the first tile in the closest centre point of the wall, keeping in mind that the last tiles in each row would be wider than half a tile.

Tip: Always stop and check to make sure your tiles are level.

There were some moments in this installation process where we had to cut a mosaic tile sheet from the back with a utility knife. With this type of tile, a wet saw with a  diamond blade was used to cut through the tiles.

Setting material was  applied to substrate while using the notched side of a V-Notched trowel. Using the flat side of trowel, we smoothed out all ridges to achieve a consistent, even (1/8 inch) coverage.

Now comes the fun part!

We applied glass  mosaic sheets, mesh-side down, firmly into the freshly spread setting material while mixing and matching from assorted sell units to achieve a consistent variation. Using a rubber float to gently press the tile into the adhesive to ensure  a complete contact. Spacers where also used to maintain a set distance between the mosaic tile sheets.

We marked measurement marks on the back of the sheets of tile in order to install the mosaic tile around  the light fixtures and electrical sockets.  Once the tiles where in place, we then measured the gaps around the sockets and used leftover pieces to fill in the gaps.

Spacers were removed once the adhesive had set.  Tiles were wiped with a clean sponge to remove any residual adhesive.

A premium penetrating sealer is recommended for a natural look referred by the manufacturers instructions  and was applied onto the stone only.

After 24 hours, a mix of non-sanded tile grout was applied with a rubber float. Afterwards, the grout was evened out by wiping the tile with a wet sponge in a circular motion. Residual grout was cleaned with a clean sponge within 5-10 minutes of grout application.

After 12 hours, any remaining haze was polished off using a dry cloth.

Expert Advice on Functional Furniture Placement

 sue
Sue Pitchforth Owner/Principal Decorator/Stager Of Decor Therapy Plus
I hear all the time from my clients that they are nervous and not sure about how to angle their furniture in a room.  Most homeowners have their furniture lined up against the wall  – many times this might not be the best and most functional furniture placement for them.

Why not try to angle your couch, dining table, chairs?  If you don’t like it you can place it back the way you had it.

Here are a few examples of how angling furniture really adds interest and energy to a room.  Have fun changing the flow and feel of your room.

Project- Door Installation By Don Of All Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

picmonkey 4

It always makes me chuckle when a client that has never installed a door believes that ” A Door Is Just A Door Right?” “It should be a breeze and shouldn’t take long at all.” I am here to tell you, yes it should be a breeze  but in a lot of cases, it’s not that simple.

This door install was a challenge but at the end of the day, it got done with fantastic results!

pic monkey 1

For this project, the original front door including the storm door and brick molding was removed. The original framing around the door was also removed because the home  owner  ordered  a new door with  brick to brick measurement’s . Interesting fact: when the homeowner originally took measurements for the new door, what he received was a brand new beautiful front door that was 3 1/2 inches too short.

Tip: If you’re thinking of replacing a door in  your home and you feel uncomfortable about taking the measurements, have the installer come and take them for  you. In most cases this cost is included in the purchase price of the door. This saves you TIME, MONEY and  AGRIVATION.

picmonkey 2

So here’s a perfect example of trouble shooting skills that  saves the day.

Due to the fact the door was 3 1/2 inches to short, we had to build out the frame to make it fit. The new door was put in the  opening and shimmed in order for it to stay in place.

picmonkey 3

Next we leveled and plumed the door making sure that it was square. Once this part of the process was completed, we then moved forward with installing all the hardware  and did a test  by opening and closing the door to make sure it worked  correctly.

Next step, we installed the brick molding on the exterior of the door. Exterior caulk was added and applied all around the brick mold and checking that all gaps were properly sealed.

picmonkey 4

In this case, we didn’t have to apply the low expansion spray foam or interior and the homeowner was going to do this part himself.
