DIY Project-How To Create A Memory Wall-Don of all Trades

http://www.donofalltrades.ca

There is nothing more exciting than transforming  a space in your home from plain old ordinary to something beautiful, unique and extraordinary.  If your walls could tell a story what would that story be? Below is a recent project Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services  completed from start to finish. We have to say that  our team but most importantly our client,  loved the results!

We took this small plain hallway, landing and staircase to the next level by adding special personal touches and turned it into a Memory Wall that will be enjoyed for years to come.  We hope this project will give you some insight and inspiration if you are considering  DIY Memory Wall of your own in your home.

Good to know tip…

You have to start with a perfectly smooth surface to end up with perfectly painted walls or woodwork.

Step 1-Surface Preparation-Before You Paint
  • Remove any removable elements like railings, door handles, light fixtures, picture frames and so on.
  • Even if your steps, railings,  walls, ceilings, trim, doors and baseboards  appear to be clean, it will still be covered in dirt, grime and oils from hands.  So, make sure to give it a once over with some warm soapy water.  we just used a mild dish-soap, followed up with a final pass of clear water, so we didn’t leave behind any soapy residue.  Then, just allow ample dry time before applying your first coat of paint.
  • Have a good look at the conditions of your walls and ceilings to find any rough patches,  holes or damage  that might need re patching,  sanding and repair accordingly.
Step 2-Make Any Necessary Repairs

The original railing was in need of repair. A new stair newel post, new top rail and mounting hardware was installed. Instead of replacing the stairs with new ones, broken steps were repaired, finished grade plywood was installed to eliminate creaking and to help add more strength to the steps.

Good to know tip…

Are the walls in your home in need of a fresh coat but not sure what color to choose?   Talk  with the paint experts to find out what colors are trending in 2018.

Step 3 – Selecting the Right Paint and Varnish

The steps were painted with 2 coats of a Charcoal Shade and finished off with 2 coats of water based varnish satin coat with #Serenity brand #Cottagepaint which was purchased at the Benjamin Moore Whitby Shores Decor Centre.

Although making the decision of trying something completely different by painting these steps a dark color was a difficult one, this client was extremely pleased at how they came out. Walls were patched and sanded. Even the front hallway closest got fresh coat of paint inside and out. Walls were painted in a shade of grey, all ceilings and trim were painted in a white.

Good to know tip…

Remember that stairways and halls must have good general lighting for safety. To prevent accidents, stairs should be lit from top to bottom with switches in both places. For safety in hallways, place lighting fixtures every 8 to 10 feet (2.4 to 3.0 m). Tie in the fixtures you choose by matching your foyer chandelier or pendant with close-to-ceiling fixtures for hallways and smaller chain hung fixtures for stairways.

Step  4 – Choosing Light Fixtures

The original outdated lighting was replaced with  more modern energy efficient  Hampton Bay 12 inch brushed nickel led flush-mount light fixtures.  These ceiling light fixtures are engineered to save you money, and they are designed to look great. This collection is a modern, elegant style featuring a brushed nickel finish and frosted glass shade that diffuses the light so that there are no shadows or dark spots. These ceiling lights are built with steel to look great and save you money for many years while blending nicely with the decor of your home.

Good to know…

Applying a wall decal can be a quick and easy way to add a new style to any room or space.

Step  5 – Choosing The Right Words To Tell A Story

We did some research on line and found a great website that offered a huge variety of non-permanent  beautiful wall lettering  quotes that was delivered right to their door.  Measurements were made prior to making an order to ensure it would fit the space on the wall it was going to be applied to.   Our client chose the  MagicWall Family Memories Wall Lettering  in colour-black-48×13 inches (122 x 33 cm) size to help tell their family’s story.  This beautiful wall quote was super easy to apply and was applied to the right side of the wall above the hand railing.

Good to know…

One of the most common reasons people develop their photos in black and white today is because it lends a certain timeless quality to the images.

Step 6 –  Memories With Meaning

These photos helped tell the story of what is important to our client.  This special project was completed  to create a space to tell a story ranging from important moments from the the past to present.

Special moments of youth, dating, marriage,  birthdays, holidays, friends and family members, home, pets and children growing up.  A total of 40 photos were developed online through  Wal-Mart Photo Centre.  All photos were reprinted  in 8×10 sizes (at a very reasonable price) on the wal-mart photo centre website in black in white to keep the theme the same and to give them all a timeless quality to the images.

A total of 40  Nikolai 8 x 10″ Black photo frames were purchased on the Walmart.ca  website (again at a very reasonable price) and were conveniently shipped to our clients door within 4 days of ordering.  To help keep the damage to the walls to a minimum, Command Brand Damage-Free Picture Hanging Strips were used to hang all photos.  These strips were a perfect solution to prevent filling in 40 nail holes in the walls later on in the future.

These walls will be telling this client’s story for years to come and will be enjoyed by neighbors, friends and family members who come to visit. We are extremely pleased at the results,  the story and special meaning  this Memory Wall tells. It’s quite simply “Beautiful.”

An event, grand opening, anniversary or re-opening is an important scope for all small businesses. It’s the perfect opportunity to have some fun and get involved with your community. For many small businesses, these events are a critical part of their long-term success. They also encourage consumers to “Shop Local” and support small businesses in their  communities.

For locals who live in these communities, these events are an ideal moment to drop in with friends and family members to find out who these new businesses are, where they are located,  what  products or services they have to offer and to show your support as a consumer.

Hiring A Handyman

Not all home repair jobs need the assistance of a general contractor or specialised service provider. A handyman may be employed for a wide range of small home improvement projects. This subsequent article explains how a handyman can fix your to-do-list while saving time and cash along the way.

To-Do-List-Girl-300x273

So What Is A Handyman?

handyman  is someone who will perform a good assortment of small tasks and odd jobs. Handymen may be found in communities all over the planet, offering affordable services from gardening  to home repair for their clients.

It’s typically straight forward  to search out a handyman; several advertise in phone books and with fliers around city, and it’s also possible to trace one down through word of mouth recommendations.  Some clients become quite attached to their handyman, since an honest one may be exhausting to search out.

A handyman or home improvement company, usually charges the client by the hour plus material prices, despite the task at hand.

Many home owners can produce an inventory list of repairs and hire a handyman to complete the list during a single visit.

Do I Hire A Handyman Or A Contractor?

The scope of the work and skill level of their trades  needed to complete it ought to confirm whether or not you hire a handyman or contractor.

When making an attempt to work out who is the right choice to hire for your specific job, contemplate the task. If it’s a specialised trade, make sure you hire that tradespersons such as a plumber or electrician, as an example. If it’s very little things that you are capable of doing  yourself, a handyman is possibly the right choice  to go with.

A handyman isn’t the most effective choice for an outsized or difficult project that would take an extended period of time to complete and need the assistance of multiple staff.  Lower Rates. Hiring a Handyman additionally prevents waste and overcharging, because the handyman will charge you for hours worked. A contractor or specialist’s price may include taking into  consideration the amount of  time it’ll take to  complete the job. Handymen are able to keep their rates low as a result of they do not need to pay extra employees and have lower overhead prices than contractors or massive corporations.

Variety of Skills.  Many homeowners consider the idea of a  handyman once they have  repairs, however do not know who to contact.  Handymen are better-known to try a variety of work  from assembling outdoor sheds and gas grills to hanging Christmas  lights and decorations.

Interior And Exterior Painting And Repairs

A handyman can be employed to repaint a wall or garage door, touch-up trim and scoff marks and repair little holes with compound. Remember, a handyman usually charges by the hour, thus larger jobs are typically better suited for an expert painting crew.

Installing Light Fixtures, Pictures, Mirrors And Window Treatments

These small tasks can  simply be accomplished by a home-owner, however by hiring a handyman with the proper tools and skill will give you peace of mind that these wall-mounted objects  are safely and properly installed without damage.

Useful Hiring Tips

Check out some of these tips below BEFORE you hire someone to do your project:

1- Google Search.  Look up a variety of Handyman Services and Contractors in your area on the internet and popular social media sites like face book, twitter and pintrest.

2- Questions & Concerns.  Ask lots of question! There’s no such thing as a “bad” question. The more you ask, the better!

3-  Quotes & Estimates. Ask for quotes, the more the better but be leery, sometimes “cheapest” doesn’t always mean better.

4- Are they legit?  Find out if the company is legitimate. Are they a  registered company?

5-Are they insured?  Does this company have insurance? Find out. Again, ask the question.

6- Ask to see their work. Ask for a portfolio to show you some of their work. In this particular industry, photo’s tell the truth. This is what they have to offer as a source to prove what kind of projects they have done. Ask   for   before and after pictures.  Anyone can copy a photo off the internet but is their work legitimate?

7- Ask for testimonials. Previous satisfied clients will have no issues giving a positive testimonial of their own completed projects. Why would they? They will want to share this information and let others know what a great job this company has done and would definitely recommend them. Of Course, testimonials will also warn other potential clients “not” to use their services either from their own bad experiences. So either way, you can get some piece of mind.

8- Look at company websites. See their work. A lot of them are on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn , Word Press, exc.  You can get a sense of who they are, what they do, latest specials and events, how they connect with their clients and how these companies are involved in your community!

9- First Impressions.   Company representatives are an example of their work and the company they own or work for. Representatives that come to your home for a quote, should be experienced, organized  knowledgeable in the field of the business, polite, well-groomed,  answer your questions and concerns and make you feel confident and comfortable.  Trust your instincts. They’re always right.

10- References. Ask your handyman about his work experience, and his former clients. If he has a successful business doing odd jobs, he’ll most likely have a list of clients. You should call at least a few of these clients to get a good sense of his work ethic and the quality of his work.

Expert Advice On Home Staging

header-5
Home staging can set you apart from your competition and lead to a faster sale. Consider investing some time to speak with a local Professional Home Stager and book a consultation. Professional Home Stagers have the experience, knowledge and tools that can help you through the process and prepare your home for listing photos. The latest stats show that 91% of buyers find there homes online. With the help of a Professional Home Stager you can help increase the potential of interested parties right away. Professional Home Staging can be more affordable than most might think  and definitely always less money than the home reductions later on. You want to make that first impression to potential buyers the moment they walk in to your home for a showing.  If you’re on a tight budget, consider using whatever you have around your home or borrow items from friends and family.  You may have children and wonder what do with their toys? Consider purchasing a large rubber bin to keep a small amount of their toys that will be easy and quick to clean up and put away when you suddenly have a potential client coming over to  see the house. Your pets feel the stress as well when it  comes to the  changes around the home. Consider temporarily having them stay a friends or families home for the week.  Buyers have to like what they see. Expert Advice on Functional Furniture Placement

 sue
Sue Pitchforth Owner/Principal Decorator/Stager Of Decor Therapy Plus
I hear all the time from my clients that they are nervous and not sure about how to angle their furniture in a room.  Most homeowners have their furniture lined up against the wall  – many times this might not be the best and most functional furniture placement for them.

Why not try to angle your couch, dining table, chairs?  If you don’t like it you can place it back the way you had it.

Here are a few examples of how angling furniture really adds interest and energy to a room.  Have fun changing the flow and feel of your room.
