At Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services, we are always contacted by clients to assist them with unique and special projects around their home. This striking staircase will certainly make an unforgettable statement when family and friends come to celebrate over the Christmas Holidays.
In many houses, the staircase is the first architectural element of the home’s interior that guests see, so homeowners want it to be appealing.
A banisterhandrail on a staircase gets touched a lot. As people walk up and down the stairs, they often grasp the handrail whether they need to or not. The handrail can give you a sense of security as you move along the stairway, but over time, the oils from your skin can damage the paint, and the simple act of sliding your hand along the handrail can wear away the paint. Painting the banister handrail can return it to its original state.
Simple fact is, you can’t have a two-story home without a staircase. However, the fact that your staircase needs to be redecorated every once in a while is often overlooked. A decorated and refinished staircase can offer a complete change without even doing that much. We can’t forget the wear and tear, that no matter what, will happen to our beautiful stairs over time. So it’s crucial to give them a little face lift from time to time. Also, a redecorated staircases can command attention and thus become the focal point of your foyer or hallway.
General Repair might include just simply refinishing your wooden stairs for a new look. Or, perhaps all you need is fresh carpet for your carpeted staircase, and of course you could always change your carpet staircase to a wooden one as well. But if you are looking to do a little more, we have a few tips and ideas for you.
Always Do Your Research
We made a trip to our local Whitby Shores Décor Centre and got assistance from the Benjamin Moore Colour Consultant team. They gave expert advice on the type of paint to choose for this particular project with results our client were looking for. We chose the Benjamin Moore Cloud White for the balusters. The colour of choice for the Banister/Handrail was to be painted in Espresso with a finishing coat of Satin Varnish Clear Coat. View our slide show below to see the before and after photos.
Welcome to Cottage Paint Serenity
Save Time With One Step Painting Process
No Priming. No Sanding. No Top Coat required. Low V.O.C.. Used for a non-distressed application. Simply prep and paint.
Cottage Paint’s new mineral paint that is reinforced with acrylic and urethane for a very durable finish that offers great adhesion to glossy surfaces. More than just a furniture paint. It can be used inside and out to paint walls, trim and doors. Available in the 50 Shades of Cottage paint. Note: Surfaces must be clean, sealed and sound.
If you are planning a DIY project for your own staircase, please remember to have patience. This project was very labour intensive and a second set of hands and eyes will help go a long way in the painting process.
Our client was extremely pleased at the transformation of this staircase and that it was completed just in time for the Christmas Holidays!
All 113 Balusters, 5 Newel Posts, String and all Facia were given 3 generous coats of Cloud White Shade Cottage Paint to ensure maximum coverage.
All 38 feet of Handrail and Banisters were painted in the Espresso shade of Cottage Paint. Followed by 3 coats of Satin Varnish Clear Coat and reassembled to give this winding staircase a beautiful rich sheen.

An assortment of mini butter tarts, mini cupcakes, cakes and cookies including the classic Dutch Butter Cookies and so much more were beautifully displayed on our tables!
There was no charge for this event but we asked each guest to donate gifts for the women and children who are staying in the shelter and help make this Christmas a little better for them.

As we say good bye to this past winter’s bitter cold that seemed like it would never end, nothing motivates homeowners more like sunny days and warmer weather.
Get a head start and welcome Spring with these great exterior home maintenance tips by Don Of All Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services.
Implementing a chimney maintenance plan is always critical for insuring the safety of your home and family. The function of a chimney is to carry dangerous fireplace, wood, oil or furnace and boiler gases safely out of your home. Chimney fires are entirely preventable with proper care and cleaning. Inspect the exterior of the chimney for sings of damage. Have the flue inspected and cleaned by a certified chimney sweep.
Downspouts and Gutters
Routine gutter and downspout maintenance can save a homeowner on repair costs. Get prepared before the Spring Rains begin. You will be amazed at how much debris has collected over such a short time. Clean out any leaves and tree branches that could cause an issue. Often, clogging occurs at the elbow in a drainage system, where the downspout connects to the gutter. This can be easily inspected by taking it off and looking for any debris that can cause it to clog.
An inspection of the outside hosefaucetschecking for any signs of leaks is important, especially in colder climates where hoses have been left on the hose bib over the winter. If the water supply pipe has frozen, the pipe can expand and crack. This pipe will leak and should be replaced a soon as possible by a certified plumber before costly water damage occurs.
Spring is a great time to get out and check the caulking around doorsand windows. Proper caulking keeps moisture away and helps with drafts issues. Again caulking makes your home more efficient and helps prevent mold.
Snow and cold can wreak havoc on your walkway. Take advantage of the warmer weather approaching to patch cracks and replace any loose bricks and pavers. Power washers are a great tool to clean out that embedded dirt, grime and stains in asphalt, concrete or stone.
Hire a qualified heating and cooling contractor to clean and service the outside unit of the air-conditioning system. An annual maintenance service call will keep the system working at peak performance levels and work more efficiently.
Mr. Don D’Orazio, President/CEO Don Of All Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services
Summary–By being pro active and executing home maintenance procedures inside and out once Spring comes around, you’ll be able to enjoy more outdoor activities with friends and family member this summer. Enjoy peace of mind by getting a head of the game before costly and timely repairs become an issue.

I recently got called to do an estimate on replacing a front doorfor a client. When I asked why they wanted to replace the door they told me the door wasn’t closing properly and the lock was broken. The door looked to be in good condition and I recommended that we could replace the door locks with new hardware. When I investigated as to why the door wasn’t closing properly I found that the top hinge of the door had loose screws and that there were stripped holes as well. So the home owner’s problem wasn’t that the door needed replacement but that it was suffering from continuous door hinge sagging.
Do you have a wood screw hole for a hinge that is loose?
Here is the best suggestion on how to go about doing this type of repair.
Door Hinge Sagging
What To Look For
Below I have included a step by step process including photos on how to fix this problem.
Removeloose screws and drill out the stripped out holes with a drill bit the same size as the dowel that you’re going to insert into the new openings that we have created.
Remove Loose Screws
Same Size Dowel & Bit
Drilling Out Holes
Remove Hinge. Glue in dowel the same diameter as the drill bit. Use a high strength wood glue. Glue, then insert dowel into holes with hammer. Once this is done let glue dry for 24 hours before moving on to the next step.
Insert Dowel into Holes
Cut the dowel off flush with the edge of the door or hinge mortise using a hammer and chisel. Pilot drill for the screw and re-mount the hinge.
By following these simple steps we managed to fix the sagging hinge. If done properly this fix will last for the life time of the door. Not only does the home owner have a door that’s working properly, we managed to save our clients hundreds of dollarsin labor and replacement costs associated with installing a new door.

Upon my inspection I found that these issues were caused by an improperly built shower base. The previous contractor had laid the ceramic for the shower floor directly on top of the subfloor without any water proofing membrane or concrete. They also used 12-inch tiles for the floor and it’s almost impossible to create a slope for the water to go to the waste drain using that size tile.
The end result was that the tile and grout failed, causing the plywood to absorb the water like a sponge. When it got to a point where the subfloor couldn’t take in any more water it started to leak onto the kitchen ceiling. Not only did it damage the ceiling it also spread from the subfloor in the shower to the subfloor in the bathroom causing the tile to crack and the toilet to move because the wood completely was rotted.
The original bathroom flooring was removed. New plywood wood was installed, screening was applied as well as a scratch coat. Our client decided on a ceramic for their floor tile. A new toilet and baseboard were also added to this bathroom.
Backer board with a built-in rubber membrane on the outer layer was installed in the shower. All joints were sealed with fiberglass mesh tape. A thin set mortar was applied to fill in all the joints in order to maintain a good tight water seal.
The original shower pan was removed. This was replaced by installing new 1 inch plywood on top of the sub floor. A layer of concrete was added to from a new base foundation. Once the concrete had cured, a rubber membrane was installed on top of the concrete. This stage of the floor was completed by adding a final top coat of concrete.
Our client’s choice of tile was a ceramic that was installed on the walls in a subway tile pattern to give it a unique and professional look. Once the tiling process was completed on all shower walls and floor, grout was applied to the tiles. The original fixtures and glass shower door were re installed.
As a professional in the home improvement business, I am extremely fortunate to be able to work with incredible clients. This project involved the remodeling of their existing bathroom that unfortunately had suffered severe water damage. Our team at Don Of All Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services was able to complete this project on time and within the client’s budget! Did we mention our client was extremely happy?
Tip:Home owners considering hiring a professional to complete a bathroom remodel should take into account that this project could take up to a week or more to complete depending on the scope of the work. Plan accordingly and communicate with your contractor on what the entire bathroom remodel process will entail and be prepared for surprises your contractor may find along the way i.e.: water damage, faulty wiring, mold etc. You may have to temporarily use the second bathroom in your home during the remodeling process. So please be patient and work together with your contractor.
