This project involved  removing the sink from the vanity. The  water supply lines did not have  shut off valves so we  install two of them.

The next step was removing  the counter top and the original anchored vanity. New vinyl tiles were installed where the old vanity was originally located.

Our client saved money on flooring costs due to the fact that they had saved left over tile from when the floor was originally installed. The floor was grouted  which resulted in a perfect match.

This new Seaside Cottage Bath Vanity Model was installed including the La Toscana Novello Single Handle Lavatory Faucet Model tie everything together.

2015 Helping Hands Charity BBQ for Hope

When people work together great things can happen!

For over a month we have been planning and organizing a charity bbq event to help raise funds and  donated items benefiting Herizon House, a not for profit organization  who provide  free confidential services 24 hours a day and provide a place of safety, support and empowerment for abused women and their children. Herizon House is committed to ending the cycle of abuse and violence in the community.

Yesterday was the day of our 2015 Helping Hands Charity BBQ for Hope Event and although considering the possibility making the difficult decision of cancelling  and rescheduling, we decided to move forward with hosting it as planned.

Despite the rain, wind and cooler than normal weather and a very well- built tarp for shelter, we are very grateful to those who volunteered, attend and donated items to make this event a huge success!

We are dedicating this blog  to these individuals who have worked incredibly hard at helping us  make a difference in our community.  This event is just an example of how when people work together, great things can happen!

We are a dedicated team of individuals focused on continuing to find ways to make our communities better and helping those who in difficult times, need help the most.

Jaccuzi Tub Tile Repair

Jacuzzi Tub Tile Repair

Project Inspection

I had the opportunity to meet and offer assistance to a  wonderful client recently with regards to issues concerning tile repair work on their Jacuzzi decking and skirt.  Upon inspection, there were a number of tiles that had come off the deck and the finishing trim was detached.  We came to a mutual agreement that it was best to remove the existing tile and replace the decking and skirt with the same colour and texture of tile to ensure  everything matched.  This project was started on a Monday and here’s how it went…

Phase 1: Demolition

The first phase of this project was to remove the original ceramic tile from the skirt and decking.  When the original builder installed the Jacuzzi deck and skirt, they framed it with “2 X 4” and covered it with 1/2 inch plywood. They then applied mesh onto the plywood and installed the tile on the mesh.  A hammer and crowbar was used to remove the original tile.

By taking our time removing the existing tile, this removal process really wasn’t that difficult. The most difficult part was removing the steel mesh.  The next step was  removing the staples that held the steel mesh onto the plywood. At this stage we had a nice clean surface to start the rebuild as shown in the photo below.

Phase 2:  Scratch-Coat

New steel mesh was applied over the entire deck and skirt. NOTE: Always put on safety work gloves to protect your hands  when working with steel mesh as this material can cause cuts and other  injuries. Staples were applied to secure the mesh onto the plywood, starting with the skirt first then the deck.  An unmodified thin-set cement was used to apply a scratch coat on to the surface area. We then let the cement dry for 24 hours.

Tip: When applying a scratch-coat, remember to keep the surface area level. Avoiding uneven surfaces will help prevent issues when you move on to the tiling stage.

My personal preference from past experience, is to keep the surface a little rough to help the new ceramic tiles bond better.

 Phase 3:  Tiling

With all the prep work now completed, we were ready to start setting new tile. Our client chose a 12×12 ceramic tile for this project. 1/4-in. spacers were used for the tile and White PVC tile edging strip was installed in the location were the deck tiles met the skirt tile.

jaccuzzi photo 12

Photos courtesy Don Of All Trades

Next stage of the project-grout.  Remember when applying grout to work a small area at a time and to go over the area with a sponge to prevent the grout from drying on the ceramic.

Phase 4: Finished Product

When looking at the finished product you can see how close we came to matching the existing back-splash, not one hundred percent but pretty close match. Grout lines came out nice and PVC tile edging strips really add the finishing touches.

Foul Smelling Washing Machines And Why

clothing_odors_s2

Are you a home owner with a Stinky Washing Machine? Not to worry, you are DEFINATLEY NOT ALONE! Washer mildew and odors are one of the most common complaints.

Some of the reasons are listed below:

  • Interestingly enough, some washing machines have the susceptibility to smell bad due to their design.
  • Bad odours from a dirty washing machine can actually transfer on to clean clothing.
  • Hard water causes lime buildup in the  washing machine parts and plumbing.
  • If you live in a humid climate, consistent moisture in the air prohibits the washing machine from completely drying between loads, causing mildew and stale and musky odours.
  • Repeatedly, soap detergent and excrement splash upwards, resulting in leaving  behind grime on parts if the agitator and wash bin that are usually located above the water line.

How Naturally Clean A  Top Loading Washing Machine

These instructions will assist in killing mold, mildew and keep foul-smelling odours away in your Top Loading Washing Machine by using natural ingredients which is safe and can be used on all washer components.

There are  two common house hold ingredients required for this process.

White Vinegar and Baking Soda.

White vinegar will help disinfect by assisting in killing mold and mildew. The acidity in the white vinegar will help dissolve the soap scum and residue in the tub along with dissolving lime deposits in the pipes  left behind from using hard water.  Baking soda cleans and deodorizes.

NOTE: DO NOT ADD CLOTHES OR DETERGENT DURING THIS CLEANING PROCESS.

Step 1.

Choose you washing machine setting to run on Hot with the largest load setting. Add anywhere between 3-4 cups of white vinegar to the water  and let your washing machine agitate for about 2 minutes in order to disperse the vinegar evenly.

add-vinegar

Step 2.

Now add 1/2 cup of baking soda. Allow the machine to agitate again for about 2 minutes to incorporate the baking soda evenly. Stop the machine washing cycle at this point and have the water sit for  approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour.

add-baking-soda

Step 3.

As the vinegar, baking soda and hot water are working, doing their job by penetrating grime and odors, use a clean cloth that has been dipped into the vinegar water and wipe down the entire washing machine. Pay special attention to the top of the washing machine, the knobs and dials, the top of the wash bin and any fabric softener and bleach dispensers.

Clean-Washing-Machine4

Step 4.

Allow the washing cycle to resume until the water begins draining. If your washer will allow it, turn the knob so the tub will drain while spinning, further cleaning out any gunk that has been loosened up and pushing the vinegar water through the holes in the wash bin. If your washer doesn’t allow this, start another hot wash cycle at this point and allow it to run through completely.

controls_GTWN4950DWH

 Step 5.

At this point, the grime and scum at the top of the wash bin should be quite easy to wipe off with a sponge. (Note: because water doesn’t reach this part, this area may need a little extra attention)

clean-dishwasher-12-300x283 - Copy

Congratulations! You have just washed your washing machine naturally!

 Useful Tips

  •  Leaving your washing machine lid open will allow the drum to completely dry and prevent mold and mildew odours from developing.
  • For best  results, implement a cleaning maintenance routine monthly.
  • Always remember to remove  your load of cleaned laundry as soon as the wash cycle is completed. This helps prevent the musky mildew smell from developing in your washer.

Read For Yourself!

I cannot stress the importance of providing  excellent customer service and providing top-notch work.  Below are just a few wonderful comments our clients have to say about our services. Bravo to our team here at Don Of All Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services!

read for yourself

1:  I cannot say enough positive things about the work that Don D’Orazio from Don Of All Trades did at my home. Don was professional, prompt, extremely clean and true to his word on the cost of the project. He is honest in all of his business dealings and very trust worthy.

Don is one of the few contractors I have dealt with who does what he says he will do and who shows up when he says he will on time and finishing the work on the day discussed.

Dealing with Don means a job well done with no surprise invoices at the end of the job. The quality of his work was absolutely first-rate and I will continue to use his services and would highly recommend him to anyone.

Mary Anne P | Ajax

2:  Actually Dan, I’m the one that’s thankful. You did a great job and you can be sure that I will be calling you back. Both my wife and I are pretty excited to have someone we can call for any job around the house big or small. You provide a valuable service and at a fair price but best of all, you actually care about the quality of your work. Many Thanks again!

Greg | Ajax

3:  Don of all Trades was approached to do a bathroom renovation, one designed to accommodate the needs of a 97-year-old veteran. The subsequent renovation became a full-scale reconstruction going far beyond the original. Many contractors might have walked away from what Don was facing, but being a consumer professional, he stayed the course while remaining within the budget, creating a walk-in shower complete in both form and function. I would have no hesitation in recommending Don for any project.

Gorden | Ajax

4:  Hi Don:

Just wanted to thank you for the excellent job you did of my kitchen and bathroom floors. Looks great! I know it will make a big
difference to me in making it easier for me to keep up without having  to bother other people. I also appreciate very much that everything was completely cleaned up  when you left. I will be sure to let others know and if I have other work needing  done I will most certainly think of you first! Again many thanks
