Repairing Your Entrance Way Stairs & Landing-Don of all Trades

Another  home improvement  project checked off the TO-DO-LIST with Don of All Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services.

It’s amazing how some paint has completely changed the look of this entrance way, stairs and landing area. The original railing was in need of repair.

A new stair newel post, new top rail and mounting hardware was installed.

Instead of replacing the stairs with new ones, broken steps were repaired, finished grade plywood was installed to eliminate creaking and to help add more strength to the steps.

Steps were painted with 2 coats of a charcoal shade and finished off with 2 coats of water based varnish satin coat with Serenity Brand Cottage Paint which was purchased at the Benjamin Moore Whitby Shores Decor Centre.

Although making the decision of trying something completely different by painting these steps a dark color was a difficult one, this client was extremely pleased at how they came out.

Walls were patched and sanded. Even the front hallway closest got fresh coat of paint inside and out. Walls were painted in a shade of grey, all ceilings and trim were painted in a white.

All this area needs now is some personal touches like adding picture frames and new lighting fixtures to complete the look of this space.

Natural Stone Backsplash- 8 Installation Tips-Don of All Trades

When remodeling a kitchen consider a Back Splash as part of your upgrades. Back splashes are a durable wall covering that protects your walls from water resulting in stains and molds. A kitchen is a high traffic area where most food preparation is made and is most likely to come into contact with water and greasy foods spatters.

You can enhance any floor or wall installation with these exquisite 12×14 mesh mounted marble mosaics  with the immanent natural shading of these classic stones.

Manufactures Recommended Applications:

  • Back splashes
  • Shower floors and walls
  • Appropriate for all residential  floor and wall applications
  • Light commercial floors

Don of All Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services recently installed this beautiful Sassi brand Bianco Polished Brick Mosaics  kitchen back splash . The results were and spectacular not to mention this natural stone is an interesting product to work with.

If you are planning on a DIY project,  we have provided 8 valuable tips to help you with your Bianco Polished Brick Mosaics Kitchen Back Splash installation including before and after photos to help you get the maximum results.

Bianco Polished Brick Mosaics-Don Of All Trades
Handy Tip Number 1

This is a natural stone product. The shade and colours will vary within cartons.

Handy Tip Number 2
Mix tiles from different cases to ensure optimal blending and install with mortar thin-set or tile adhesive.
 Handy Tip Number 3
When installing natural marble keep in mind that the stone is very soft and when you cut the stone be mindful that at the end of the cut you have the possibility of breaking the stone. We recommend using a scrap piece of stone tile behind the tile that is being cut to stabilize the cutting blade and reduce tile breakage.
Premium Stone Backsplash-Don of All Trades
Premium Stone Backsplash-Don of All Trades
  Handy Tip Number 4

When installing 12×12 sheet tile it is very important to use the proper v-notch trowel when applying the tile adhesive.  By applying too much adhesive and you will run into all sorts of problems with tile slippage and the adhesive squeezing out of the grout joints. Always follow manufactures recommendation on trowel size.
Bianco Polished Brick Mosaics-Don Of All Trades
 Handy Tip Number 5
When installing natural stone marble keep in mind that this type of stone is very heavy and you will need to use the proper mastic. All tile adhesive are not created equal. You will want to find a tile adhesive that is specified for use on natural stone. One that has a high bond strength and that will not sag is recommended. Ask your supplier what they carry and what’s best for your application.
Bianco Polished Brick Mosaics-Don Of All Trades
  Handy Tip Number 6
All natural stone needs to be sealed prior to grouting. Natural stone is very pores and will absorb the grout colour and hide the natural features of the stone. Not to mention it could ruin the job by giving an undesired look.  A premium penetrating sealer that can  enhance the features of the natural stone is recommended.
 Handy Tip Number 7

When picking a grout try to find one that complements all the colours that are in your natural stone. Typically when installing natural stone you want to use a non sanded grout.

Reasons for choosing non sanded are as follows:

Number 1:

Natural stone scratches very easily and you don’t want to damage the finish on the stone with the sand.

Number 2:

The second reason is these grout joints were less than 3 millimeters and it would be difficult to put sanded grout in such small joints.

 Handy Tip Number 8
Maintenance and care. Wipe sealed stone with a damp cloth. Only use cleaners specifically designed for natural stone.
Once you kitchen back splash project is complete, natural stone will give beauty and durability and should last a lifetime with proper maintenance.

 Kinds words from our client…

Don did a fantastic job on our backsplash. He came to our home and provided a quote and was able to do the backsplash the following week. He pays great attention to details. He was willing to come on multiple days in order to ensure that our stone was properly sealed, and grouted. The finished product is more than I could have even expected. He was very professional and just a wonderful person to do business with. We will certainly contact Don again when we do future renovations!

Selling Your Condo? Renovation tips with Don of All Trades

There are many opportunities for investors to purchase new condo units. When you list your unit on the resale condo market, it needs to stand out. Below are some simple condo renovations that will get your asking price or better.

Flooring

If your home has hardwood floors, in it pays to have any carpeting removed and the floors refinished. Replace worn out existing carpeting with light tan or other neutral-colored carpeting. Replace chipped or cracked ceramic tile. Clean or replace the grout.

Photos provided by Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Ceilings & Walls

Nothing says freshness like a new coat of paint.  It hides stains from grease or smoke and ceiling cracks. Use fiberglass tape on large cracks, cover with joint compound and sand, then paint a neutral color.

Photos provided by Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Kitchen

Statistically, kitchen remodels return nearly 100%. Cabinetry is highly visible because it is at eye level.  Resurface beat-up cabinets by replacing the doors and hardware. If your cabinets are painted, add a fresh coat of paint and new hardware.

Granite counters, though popular, are not strictly necessary. Simple laminates, newer faucets and sparkling sinks sell very well.

Bathrooms

The national average of recouped cost is more than 100% for bathrooms. New floors, fixtures and lights pay off.

Basement Painting Tips-Don of all Trades

Basement Painting Tips-Don of all Trades
Photos provided by Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Painting your basement  can have a major effect on how the space looks and feels. It’s astonishing what a fresh coat of  paint can do when attempting to spruce up a room, and your basement no different.  Unfortunately,  bringing a basement to life  can be somewhat more difficult than other rooms in your home.

Basement Painting Tips-Don of all Trades
Photos provided by Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Numerous basements are just utilized as storage areas, but wouldn’t it be wonderful  to use your space as a home office, a basement gym, or a room your whole family can enjoy?

Below are some photos of a recent basement project our team at Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services  completed along with our 6 painting tips that we hope will inspire  and help to make your basement a friendly and happy place.

Tip 1-  Use Lighter Paint Hues

This isn’t as complicated  as it sounds.  Locate the places that get a lot of natural or artificial light and paint these areas with lighter colours. The whole point  here is to focus on the areas that are already accepting light and keeping the lighter paint colours  out of the darker regions of your basement.

Tip 2- Use Rich Colours

Applying rich colours will help give your basement an “open” feel. Numerous homeowners aim to achieve this with light colours, for example, white or yellow, however using a richly saturated paint choice like a Benjamin Moore Interior Latex Pearl Base Paint in Whale Gray Colour code#  2134-40   can be more effective than choosing an poorly saturated yellow paint as an option.

Tip 3- Reduce the Number of Colours

Using  a large number of colours can overwhelm your room. Interior  designers suggest utilizing the 60-30-10 standard to shield your room from having an excessive number of colours.

  • 60% of the room should be the dominant color.
  • 30% should be the secondary color.
  • 10% should be used for accents.

For this project we made it simple. 2 colours were chosen to paint this basement space. A Pearl base Whale Grey hue  for the walls and Semi Gloss White Interior paint for the ceilings and trim. White window treatments were used as accents to finish off this now organized, fresh and clean space.

Photos provided by Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Tip 4- Add Extra Lighting

Light helps give the illusion that a room is bigger (and much cleaner) than the actual space. You can easily create this effect  by incorporating a table or floor lamp.  Track lighting or lights suspended from your ceilings can also be a simple and affordable  approach to include extra lighting.

Installing recessed lighting can involve more work and more expensive as an option however,  it adds a updated modern look and feel to a room.

A basic and affordable solution to expand the light in your basement space is through the use of mirrors.  Mirrors help “ricochet” the light around the room and give the illusion the space is larger.

For this basement painting project, the home owner decided to keep all  original light fixtures and pot lights but decided to replace existing light bulbs  with Ecosmart 60W  Soft White  LED Light BulbsThe EcoSmart A19 8.5-Watt LED Light Bulb can be used to replace a traditional 60W incandescent A19 light bulb. This LED light bulb has an output of 800 Lumens and can last up to 10,000 hours, saving you up to $56.65 per bulb over the bulb’s life. The bulb is designed for indoor use and features an A-line shape and medium base. EcoSmart A19 bulbs are perfect for your living room, bedroom, kitchen or any place in your home where you would use a standard incandescent light bulb. These bulbs give off a lot of light and were the perfect solution to  brighten up this basement.

Tip 5- Select A Glossy Finish

Because basements have a tendency to be damp, glossy finishes are an excellent paint choice and more suited to resist stains and moisture.  Remember to make sure your walls are smooth and clean before you apply the paint as glossier finishes tend to show imperfects more than other paint finishes.

Tip 6- Use Concrete Paint on Concrete Walls

Using concrete paint is a little different than regular wall paint because it generally requires more paint to cover the surface. When painting concrete surfaces keep in mind that it can take over a week to finish the job however, your concrete walls will be protected with the proper finish.

New Year’s Resolution- Getting Your Basement Organized

Photos provided by Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Utilizing your basement as a storage area can be difficult as the space can quickly become cluttered and unorganized. You can make storage more efficient by creating an organized system for your items. While plastic storage bins are great for holding your stuff, when they pile up, it becomes difficult to get to the bottom bin without moving the rest in the stack. To solve this problem, create a storage organizer that will give easy access to all of them.

If your basement is on your list of New Years Resolutions here’s a recent project Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services completed to help tackle these home owners issues by creating more storage space.

Photos provided by Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

These homeowners had a bit of a challenge searching for a shelving unit that would fit their older home’s basement low ceilings. After doing some research on-line they found an IkeaHejne 4 section shelving unit that was a perfect solution to their needs and within their budget. Modifications were made with the shelving in order to house larger items that did not fit with the original design. The next issue was how to come up with a solution to enclose this piece so that our clients wouldn’t actually see what was inside and to give it more character. Shower Curtains, Venetian Blinds and Curtain Panels with Grommets were just some of the idea options our clients offered.

Photos provided by Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Our team asked if they would consider closing this shelving off with doors. They loved the idea and we moved forward with the project. We came up with a plan to design doors made from finished grade plywood and completing the look by adding cabinet door hinges and contemporary metal handle hardware. The results were fantastic!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

By adding custom-built doors, we have now created the perfect storage organizer unit by closing off these open shelves so that these home owners don’t have to live with the cluttered look.
