DIY Weekend Projects-Turning An Old Dresser Into A Coffee Station -Don of all Trades

Our office was in desperate need of a new piece of furniture that was going to act as coffee station but also function as extra  storage space.  One of our team members here at Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services who also  happens to be a member of the Facebook BLACK MARKET – VarageSale site, found this old solid wooden dresser and got it for a steal  at just $50!  As a fast, economical way to breathe new life into this old piece, we  gave it 3 coats of chalk paint and we absolutely love the results.  Thinking of  up-cycling your tired furniture with paint and colour? Follow these easy DIY instructions for how to prep and paint wood furniture with beautiful results in just 1 weekend.

Surface Preparation-Before You Paint

  • Remove any removable elements like hardware, shelves, drawers.
  • Run your hand across the piece to find any rough patches that might need sanding (but you do NOT need to sand the entire piece when using Chalk Paint–even if it’s varnished!).
  • Fill any holes with wood glue.
  • Even if your furniture piece appears to be clean, it will still be covered in oils from hands.  So, make sure to give it a once over with some warm soapy water.  we just used a mild dish-soap, followed up with a final pass of clear water, so we didn’t leave behind any soapy residue.  Then, just allow ample dry time before applying your first coat of paint.
  • Edge off any sections that won’t be painted using painter’s tape (like the inside of drawers).

Chalk Paint-Our Choice for This Project

So what exactly is chalk paint? Chalky-finish paint is a latex-based paint to which a fine granular powder has been added—often Plaster of Paris. After the paint dries, the granules create a matte finish. Brush strokes and imperfections become part of the look, making it a forgiving finish to apply. The finish can be sanded in places to create a distressed look or waxed for either an aged look or more satin finish than paint alone.

We’ve used this Rust-Oleum® Chalked Ultra Matte Paint in Linen White  product on a previous project in the past and loved the results.

A little more info about Chalked Ultra Matte Paint

Rust-Oleum® Chalked Ultra Matte Paint is a thicker paint that creates an ultra matte finish with superior adhesion and coverage.  It rejuvenates furniture and home décor with timeless elegance.  It can be painted or distressed, giving any project a one of a kind look with a vintage feel.

Product Overview:

  • Easy application
  • Indoor use only
  • Dries to a velvety smooth finish
  • Easily distressed to create a vintage look

Best Paint Brush for Chalk Paint

The brush that you choose is super important, as it will affect the way your paint goes on. Our favorite brushes to use are the Nour Craft 1 1/2 inch Premium Oval Brush. Keep in mind that chalk paint does show brush strokes, which is part of it’s charm, but that also means that you want to keep your brush strokes going in the same direction.  It really helps if you’re painting a wood piece because you can just follow the grain of the wood.  When you’re finished painting, you can clean your brushes with warm water and a mild soap.

Photos courtesy of Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services
Nour Craft 1 1/2 inch Premium Oval Brush. The 1.5 inch (37mm) Premium Oval Brush is a professional polyester brush for use with all paints and wax. This brush is ideal for spreading wax because of the density and firmness of the filaments and is best suited for application on medium-sized objects. In addition, the oval shape provides greater coverage.

Product Overview:

  • Dyed, tipped and flagged polyester filaments
  • High density of filaments (increased paint pick-up & release)
  • Fine tips for smooth finish
  • Firm stiffness (excellent for wax application)
  • Oval Handle
  • Oval Brush

Good to know Tip-How To Apply a Chalk Finish Paint

Practice painting a scrap board before tackling a project. When layering different paint colors for a distressed finish, apply a heavier base coat than top coat. Work quickly — chalk-finish paint dries fast  and immediately remove any particles in the wet paint.

Our First Coat of Chalk Finish Paint Applied

As mentioned above, Rust-Oleum® Chalked Ultra Matte Paint  is quite thick, and it’s meant to show brush strokes.  We found  that by  adding a little water to our paint makes the brush strokes a little less noticeable and makes the paint go further.  If you’re going to add water, we would recommend putting a little paint in another container and adding small amounts of water at a time until you have reached your desired consistency.  Also, if you’re painting from the can and the lid is left off for a good amount of time, the paint can thicken even more.  In this case you can simply add a little water to the can and shake it up. Dry time was 1 hour before applying the second coat of chalk paint to this piece.

Third and Final Chalk Finish Paint Coat Applied

Day number 2 was extremely exciting for us as this was the moment were we got a good opportunity to appreciate the benefits of painting this piece with chalk paint. Considering this was a second hand piece that the previous owner had for years, this dresser was in truly good shape.

Adding a Protective Top Coat

Since this piece was being used as a coffee station, we chose the Rust-oleum Chalked Protective Top Coat Brand to add extra protection against any spills or accidents. We found that this product worked like it said it would. This is a good sealer for the chalked paint. We also wanted to mention that this product  does darken the colors a bit.  Over all, we are  very happy with the results.

Rust-Oleum Chalked Protective Topcoat

Product Overview:

  • Adds a protective, sealed clear topcoat to any chalked surface
  • Ultra-matte, smooth finish enhances color and durability
  • Goes on in 1 to 2 coats with no need to reapply

 Painting the Hardware

So we decided to give the drawer hardware a new look by giving them a light sanding and applying  Rust-Oleum®  Brand Spray paint specifically designed for metal surfaces to help give them a new look and to add a little more character to the dresser drawers. Once dry, we added them to the drawers and we have to say our new coffee station is looking good!

Finished Product

Our DIY Weekend Project-Turning An Old Dresser Into A Coffee Station  is finally finished and ready to enjoy! It looks fantastic and we look forward to finding more great deals out there on line to work on in the future. Perhaps the  single most beneficial aspect of chalk painting furniture is that it requires almost no prep work and no priming.  Another plus is that you don’t have to be a perfect painter to do this. In fact, you are SUPPOSED to do criss-cross brush strokes and not straight lines.  Anyone can do this!

DIY Weekend Projects-Turning Something Old Into Something New-Don of all Trades

Regardless of how much we love our furniture, a few pieces tend to begin going into disrepair sooner than others. In other cases, we may go gaga over a new piece of furniture item that will come to replace an older unit in our homes. Whatever the case might be, furniture pieces tend to travel every which way inside numerous homes.

It’s actually sad to discard good quality  furniture that way, yet these pieces  regularly take up excessive amounts of  room when they are no longer useful in our homes. If your furniture is sturdy and still  fully functional, you could sell it to a new home. Unfortunately, a significant number of these house hold items  simply wind up on the curb for garbage day.

Before you toss out your next piece of furniture item, consider  these fantastic DIY ventures that particularly re-purpose old furniture pieces. You’ll wish that you had spared a portion of those things from your old collection. Below are two  weekend DIY projects that we recently completed by up-cycling old pieces we already had around the house to look new again.

Pillar Accent Table Weekend Project No.1

Photo Courtesy of Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Our family has had this piece for over 17 years. We actually purchased this pillar at a home and garden center in the damaged section of the store.  Got a great deal on it and brought it home. This pillar was used as a decorative decor  piece in our home for years. It held a beautiful blue glass vase with an arrangement of large silk sunflowers in it and was showcased in our living room until it ended up in our basement along with our many other collections of pieces that we just didn’t use anymore.  My wife had a hard time deciding on whether to sell it or hold on to it for future use.  During this years HUGE spring cleaning and de-cluttering process, we decided to keep this piece by repairing, up-cycle and giving this piece a new function  and home in the house.  And we’re sure glad we did!

Repairs were made to rebuild a damaged corner.

Our Choice of Paint

We had left over paint from a previous project with great results and decided to use it again on this particular project.   Chalked Ultra Matte Paint creates a matte finish that dries to a velvety smooth finish. It transforms and rejuvenates furniture and home decor, creating a unique one of a kind look.

Photo courtesy of Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Why Paint with Ultra Matte Paint in Linen White?

  • Easy to us e – No prepping or priming required
  • Use on wood, metal, ceramic, canvas and more
  • Water based for easy clean up

Three great reasons why we chose this paint to get this DIY weekend project done.

Photo Courtesy of Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

A beautiful custom fit piece of glass was cut and purchased to add more area space to the top of the pillar along with helping to give this piece a new unique one of a kind look and to fit into the new chosen space.

Photo Courtesy of Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Inexpensive self adhesive Non-Slip Stoppers were attached to the top of the pillar to help prevent the glass from slipping.

And voila! Our New Pillar Accent Table is done.  Love the new fresh clean look, new function and home where we can enjoy it for many more years to come!

Seashell Accent Mirror Weekend Project No.2

Photo Courtesy of Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Now this was a fun project to complete. We had an old mirror hanging around and decided to give it a new look that would compliment along side  with our new pillar accent table.

Photo Courtesy of Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

We covered the mirror glass in order to protect  it with the help of painters tape and some paper. Glue and sand was added to the mirror first to help tie it in with the seashells.

Photo Courtesy of Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Once dried, we created a pattern of shells around the mirror to figure out where which shells were going to be placed.

Photo courtesy of Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Many, many seashells and lots of  glue sticks later along with a lot of patience, our seashell accent mirror was finally completed. It was placed above the new pillar accent table in the tiny front foyer area. Love the new look of this small space and being able to turn something old and turning it into something new again.

Old furniture can be an eye sore, but for the crafty, old furniture items are an opportunity to transform the old into something new and delightful. Whether you just want to dress up an old piece or create something entirely new from its parts, just remember that with a little bit of motivation, hard work and imagination, the possibilities are endless.

Winter season interior painting makes great sense!

House painting in the midst of the colder months isn’t  a great deal of an issue.  Actually, professional  painters paint throughout the winter seasons  all the  time. Here are four reasons why you should also:

  1.  You won’t have issues with stickiness, which can occur in summer. A damp or humid situation will back off the dry time for paint. It additionally makes it physically all the more difficult in a hot situation.
  2. Tradesmen  may not be  as occupied and are frequently available  for winter work. Their schedules may be more open to a accommodate appointment bookings months in advance of the spring and summer seasons.
  3. There is a good possibility that you may be able to negotiate a better price for the project to be completed. Amid the off-season a Tradesman may bring down their costs in order to get your work.
  4. Painting now will maximize the value of your home, more so if you are  considering the thought of putting it on the market for sale in the spring.

Do it yourself interior painting is by far the most  affordable way to freshen up any  room in your home. The advantage of painting is that it’s not terribly  difficult and doesn’t require “military” training. All you need is  a little patience, practice, and some helpful advice.  Learn more…

Affordable Home Improvement Tips

No matter how you look at it, making  home improvements is a costly endeavor.  The bottom line is when it comes to remodeling and renovating a home, homeowners are going to be spending thousands and thousands of dollars on contractors, specialists and more. The benefit of this is that you do make that money back in resale value although it can take some time to sell the home and get it suitable for new potential buyers.

Hands holding a piggy bank and a house model

On a positive note, did you know that there are ways to improve your home  that do not require a home owner to spend thousands of dollars in initial investments or skilled labor that take a big Chunk of Change out of their wallet? Here are a few solutions that a you can do to improve their home for less than you might think.

Buying brand new appliances is a great investment for a home, but it can also cost quite a bit of money. If you’re looking to spend less but still tie the room together, why not consider a face-lift? New doors and face panels on appliances can get them to match, bring the room together in a stylish way, and save you big bucks on the technical appliances while still allowing for a great look in the room and a definite upgrade in the home’s design.

Energy efficient lighting fixtures and light bulbs are an affordable alternative that will go a long way in your home. Today, most homeowners are concerned about heating and electricity costs along with wanting to do their share to improve the impact on the environment.  Light fixtures that have earned the ENERGY STAR certification translate to quality, cutting edge design and the latest in efficient technology. ENERGY STAR Certified Fixtures: Use 90% less energy and produce about 70-90% less heat than traditional models using incandescent light bulbs. The most popular light bulbs available are halogen incandescents, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Although they can initially cost more than traditional incandescent bulbs, during their lifetime they save you money, because they use less energy.

In lieu of doing a complete kitchen remodel, homeowners can get quite a bit of use out of working through new doors and cabinets. This simple fix alone can go a long way to making the kitchen seem like a completely new and different room  without spending the big bucks on an entire kitchen remodeling job.

One of the best low-cost ways to inexpensively dress up your home-especially for potential buyers-is to increase your home’s curb appeal in a resourceful way. Hiring a professional landscaper to come by and re-design your lawn, patio and trees will help your home look cleaner, look better and more sleek. The better your home looks on the curb, the better chance you have of improving it at a lower cost to you and selling it a higher value-and you didn’t have to do anything major to the home.

At the end of the day, there are ways to improve your home in a cheap and cost-efficient manner without breaking the bank. When you’re smart about where and how you improve your home, you may be surprised at how well you can sell it with minimal work being done, and your bank account and stress levels will thank you for it, too!

Hello Autumn-Your Complete Fall Home Maintenance Check List

Hello Autumn

Your Complete Fall Home’s  Maintenance  Check List

It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over. Keep your home warm and running efficiently with our fall home maintenance checklist. It’s time to get your home ready for winter.

It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over. Keep your home warm and running efficiently with our fall home maintenance checklist. It’s time to get your home ready for winter.

Most of the tasks listed below are well with-in the average home owner’s ability. But if you decide on hiring a professional to take care of them, it’s worth the expense. You will save time, money and perhaps even your life.

Fall Home Maintenance Check-List

  • Roof Inspection
  • Chimney
  • Gutters
  • Doors & Windows
  • Exterior Hoses
  • Driveways & Walkways
  • Air-Conditioning Maintenance
  • Outdoor Furniture
  • Furnace Maintenance
  • Wood Burning Stove Maintenance
  • Smoke Detectors
  • General Clean Up

Roof Inspection

Make sure the roof is in good condition. Check for loose or missing tiles and for any cracks in the chimney. If you’ve been putting off the task replacing the shingles over the last few years, well now’s a good time to get them replaced. Hire a professional roofing contractor to patch up any gaps and replace shingles.

Implementing a chimney maintenance plan is always critical for insuring the safety of your home and family. The function of a chimney is to carry dangerous fireplace, wood, oil or furnace and boiler gases safely out of your home.   Chimney fires are entirely preventable with proper care and cleaning. Inspect the exterior of the chimney for sings of damage. Have the flue inspected and cleaned by a certified chimney sweep.

Check the gutter systems outside your home. Be mindful for any broken or leaking gutters, and repair them as soon possible. Clogged gutters can lead to damaged exterior surfaces and to water in your basement. Clear out any leaves and other debris that tend to collect over the summer and fall seasons and have them covered with mesh guards to keep debris from returning. Doing this will reduce the risks of leaks and blockages during freezing weather.

Doors and Windows

Fall is a great time to get out and check the caulking around doors and windows. Proper caulking keeps moisture away and helps with drafts issues. Again caulking makes your home more efficient and helps prevent mold.

Drafts through your front doors don’t seem as much of a problem in the summer months, but the truth is it can be.  If your weather strip allows a ¼” opening around a door, it’s like a hole in the wall that is 4” x 4”.  Drafts don’t seem as noticeable the summer months because the air flows from cold to warm which is why it’s more noticeable in the winter season.

On that note, the best course of action would be replace the weather strip on your door. You can do this by going to your local building supply company and purchase a weather strip that is similar to what is currently on your door.  If you don’t see one that is similar just buy a “universal” type and install it on the door frame.  Every little bit of money saved on the Electricity Bill is a good thing and you may be pleasantly surprised next summer when you notice a difference of savings  in your electricity  bill since your doors will seal better!

Exterior Hoses

Commonly Known as hose bibs or sill-cocks, the exterior faucet needs to have its water supply turned off inside the house, and you also need to drain water from it by opening up the exterior faucet. You may also want to consider an insulated cover for the hose bib. Your garden hoses should be disconnected from the sill cocks or outside faucets and drained if stored outside.

Driveway & Walkways

Damaged walkways, drives, and steps are a hazard year round, but their dangers are compounded when the weather turns icy. Fixing problems in the fall is also critical to preventing little problems from becoming expensive headaches.

Look for cracks more than 1/8-inch wide, uneven sections, and loose railings on steps. Check for disintegration of asphalt, or washed-out materials on loose-fill paths.

Most small jobs are well within the ability of a do-it-yourself, but save major repairs for experienced hands.

Air-Conditioning Maintenance

Central Air conditioning systems: Take a hose with the spray head set to “jet” or the highest pressure you have and clean the fan blades and condensing coils of clear of debris and dirt. Left unprotected the condensing unit can be damaged by wet leaves and debris that contribute to rusting and freezing of internal components. Although these units are designed for outdoor use, covering them with a breathable waterproof cover made for that purpose will extending the life and efficient performance of the unit.

Outdoor Furniture

Any outdoor furniture and garden accessories, lighting, should be stored in a dry place such a shed or a garage. If you lack storage space and have the room, you may even use space in your basement to protect your items from the winter elements.

Furnace Maintenance

Fall is a perfect time to clean or replace your furnace filter. Reusable filters can be washed down and re installed. Disposable filters should be replaced with a new one. Dirty filters lower your HVAC system’s efficiency so it’s a good idea to change them accordingly.

Once a year, it’s a good idea to have your heating system inspected by a professional. To avoid the last-minute rush, consider scheduling this task in early fall, before the heating season begins.

Here are signs that you should have an inspection performed sooner:

Noisy Belts– Unusual screeches or whines may be a signal that belts connected to the blower motor are worn or damaged.

Poor Performance– A heating system that doesn’t seem to work as well as it once did could be a sign of various problems. Your heating ducts might be blocked, the burners might be misadjusted, or the blower motor could be on its last legs. One check you should be sure to conduct: Make sure your furnace filter is clean.

Erratic Behaviour– This could be caused by a faulty thermostat or a misadjusted furnace.

Wood Burning Stove Maintenance

Wood burning stoves are a great way to add atmosphere and warmth to your home. But regular inspections are needed to ensure that these devices don’t become a safety hazard. Here’s how to check them.

Cracks in stovepipes attached to wood stoves can release toxic fumes into your home. Throughout the heating season, you should check for corrosion, holes, or loose joints. Clean the stovepipe, and then look for signs of deterioration or looseness. Replace stovepipe if necessary.

 Smoke Detectors

Test your smoke alarm monthly and clean it every 6 months.  Mark it on your calendar so that you don’t forget.  Things to remember when testing your smoke alarm:

  • Ensure that power is being transmitted to the alarm and that it will activate in the presence of smoke.
  • Test your smoke alarm by pressing the test button.
  • Even alarms with a pilot light that indicate power is being transmitted, should be tested regularly.
  • Battery-operated smoke alarms will warn you when batteries need replacing.   Despite this, make it a habit to change the batteries yearly.
  • When you’ve been away from home for a few days, check your alarm on your return to ensure it is working properly.
  • Remember, your smoke alarm can’t protect you if the batteries have been removed or a plug has been disconnected.
  • The lifespan of a typical smoke alarm is about 10 years, but some models last as little as 5 years.
  • To clean the alarm, open the cover and gently vacuum the interior of it.  Frequently, the alarm will sound while the unit is being cleaned.

General Clean Up

Rid your home of accumulations of old newspapers and leftover hazardous household chemicals. (Check with your local Municipal Hazardous Waste or Special Waste Agency about the proper way to discard dangerous chemicals.) Store flammable materials and poisons in approved, clearly labeled containers. Keep a clear space around heaters, furnaces, and other heat-producing appliances.
