How To Fix A Sagging Door In 3 Simple Steps

Solutions To Continuous Door Hinge Sagging

I recently got called to do an estimate on replacing a front door for a client. When I asked why they wanted to replace the door they told me the door wasn’t closing properly and the lock was broken. The door looked to be in good condition and I recommended that we could replace the door locks with new hardware. When I investigated as to why the door wasn’t closing properly I found that the top hinge of the door had loose screws and that there were stripped holes as well. So the home owner’s problem wasn’t that the door needed replacement but that it was suffering from continuous door hinge sagging.

Do you have a wood screw hole for a hinge that is loose?

Here is the best suggestion on how to go about doing this type of repair.

Things to Look For

What To Look For

Below I have included a  step by step process including photos  on how to fix this problem.

Step 1

Remove loose screws and drill out the stripped out holes with a drill bit the same size as the dowel that you’re going to insert into the new openings that we have created.

STEP 2

Remove Hinge. Glue in dowel the same diameter as the drill bit. Use a high strength wood glue. Glue, then insert dowel into holes with hammer. Once this is done let glue dry for 24 hours before moving on to the next step.

Cut the dowel off flush with the edge of the door or hinge mortise using a hammer and chisel. Pilot drill for the screw and re-mount the hinge.

By following these simple steps we managed to fix the sagging hinge. If done properly this fix will last for the life time of the door. Not only does the home owner have a door that’s working properly, we managed to save our clients hundreds of dollars in labor and replacement costs associated with installing a new door.

Foul Smelling Washing Machines And Why

clothing_odors_s2

Are you a home owner with a Stinky Washing Machine? Not to worry, you are DEFINATLEY NOT ALONE! Washer mildew and odors are one of the most common complaints.

Some of the reasons are listed below:

  • Interestingly enough, some washing machines have the susceptibility to smell bad due to their design.
  • Bad odours from a dirty washing machine can actually transfer on to clean clothing.
  • Hard water causes lime buildup in the  washing machine parts and plumbing.
  • If you live in a humid climate, consistent moisture in the air prohibits the washing machine from completely drying between loads, causing mildew and stale and musky odours.
  • Repeatedly, soap detergent and excrement splash upwards, resulting in leaving  behind grime on parts if the agitator and wash bin that are usually located above the water line.

How Naturally Clean A  Top Loading Washing Machine

These instructions will assist in killing mold, mildew and keep foul-smelling odours away in your Top Loading Washing Machine by using natural ingredients which is safe and can be used on all washer components.

There are  two common house hold ingredients required for this process.

White Vinegar and Baking Soda.

White vinegar will help disinfect by assisting in killing mold and mildew. The acidity in the white vinegar will help dissolve the soap scum and residue in the tub along with dissolving lime deposits in the pipes  left behind from using hard water.  Baking soda cleans and deodorizes.

NOTE: DO NOT ADD CLOTHES OR DETERGENT DURING THIS CLEANING PROCESS.

Step 1.

Choose you washing machine setting to run on Hot with the largest load setting. Add anywhere between 3-4 cups of white vinegar to the water  and let your washing machine agitate for about 2 minutes in order to disperse the vinegar evenly.

add-vinegar

Step 2.

Now add 1/2 cup of baking soda. Allow the machine to agitate again for about 2 minutes to incorporate the baking soda evenly. Stop the machine washing cycle at this point and have the water sit for  approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour.

add-baking-soda

Step 3.

As the vinegar, baking soda and hot water are working, doing their job by penetrating grime and odors, use a clean cloth that has been dipped into the vinegar water and wipe down the entire washing machine. Pay special attention to the top of the washing machine, the knobs and dials, the top of the wash bin and any fabric softener and bleach dispensers.

Clean-Washing-Machine4

Step 4.

Allow the washing cycle to resume until the water begins draining. If your washer will allow it, turn the knob so the tub will drain while spinning, further cleaning out any gunk that has been loosened up and pushing the vinegar water through the holes in the wash bin. If your washer doesn’t allow this, start another hot wash cycle at this point and allow it to run through completely.

controls_GTWN4950DWH

 Step 5.

At this point, the grime and scum at the top of the wash bin should be quite easy to wipe off with a sponge. (Note: because water doesn’t reach this part, this area may need a little extra attention)

Congratulations! You have just washed your washing machine naturally!

 Useful Tips

  •  Leaving your washing machine lid open will allow the drum to completely dry and prevent mold and mildew odours from developing.
  • For best  results, implement a cleaning maintenance routine monthly.
  • Always remember to remove  your load of cleaned laundry as soon as the wash cycle is completed. This helps prevent the musky mildew smell from developing in your washer.

PicMonkey Collage 5

To-Do-List-Girl-300x273

So What Is A Handyman?

handyman  is someone who will perform a good assortment of small tasks and odd jobs. Handymen may be found in communities all over the planet, offering affordable services from gardening  to home repair for their clients.

It’s typically straight forward  to search out a handyman; several advertise in phone books and with fliers around city, and it’s also possible to trace one down through word of mouth recommendations.  Some clients become quite attached to their handyman, since an honest one may be exhausting to search out.

Do I Hire A Handyman Or A Contractor?

The scope of the work and skill level of their trades  needed to complete it ought to confirm whether or not you hire a handyman or contractor.

When making an attempt to work out who is the right choice to hire for your specific job, contemplate the task. If it’s a specialised trade, make sure you hire that tradespersons such as a plumber or electrician, as an example. If it’s very little things that you are capable of doing  yourself, a handyman is possibly the right choice  to go with.

A handyman isn’t the most effective choice for an outsized or difficult project that would take an extended period of time to complete and need the assistance of multiple staff. Useful Hiring Tips

Check out some of these tips below BEFORE you hire someone to do your project:

1- Google Search.  Look up a variety of Handyman Services and Contractors in your area on the internet and popular social media sites like face book, twitter and pintrest.

2- Questions & Concerns.  Ask lots of question! There’s no such thing as a “bad” question. The more you ask, the better!

3-  Quotes & Estimates. Ask for quotes, the more the better but be leery, sometimes “cheapest” doesn’t always mean better.

4- Are they legit?  Find out if the company is legitimate. Are they a  registered company?

5-Are they insured?  Does this company have insurance? Find out. Again, ask the question.

6- Ask to see their work. Ask for a portfolio to show you some of their work. In this particular industry, photo’s tell the truth. This is what they have to offer as a source to prove what kind of projects they have done. Ask   for   before and after pictures.  Anyone can copy a photo off the internet but is their work legitimate?

7- Ask for testimonials. Previous satisfied clients will have no issues giving a positive testimonial of their own completed projects. Why would they? They will want to share this information and let others know what a great job this company has done and would definitely recommend them. Of Course, testimonials will also warn other potential clients “not” to use their services either from their own bad experiences. So either way, you can get some piece of mind.

8- Look at company websites. See their work. A lot of them are on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn , Word Press, exc.  You can get a sense of who they are, what they do, latest specials and events, how they connect with their clients and how these companies are involved in your community!

9- First Impressions.   Company representatives are an example of their work and the company they own or work for. Representatives that come to your home for a quote, should be experienced, organized  knowledgeable in the field of the business, polite, well-groomed,  answer your questions and concerns and make you feel confident and comfortable.  Trust your instincts. They’re always right.

10- References. Ask your handyman about his work experience, and his former clients. If he has a successful business doing odd jobs, he’ll most likely have a list of clients. You should call at least a few of these clients to get a good sense of his work ethic and the quality of his work.

Up for a DIY challenge? Here’s some important steps to remember BEFORE you start the installation process.

Important Information To Remember

  • Make sure the surface is level and clean prior to installation.
  • If applying mosaic tile on gypsum, it is important to apply a coat of primer prior to beginning your mosaic wall tile installation.
  • Always check all the purchased boxes of tiles before starting. I have been in situations where clients thought what they purchased was all the same tile when in fact what they brought home was 3 different types of tile.  This step saves everyone involved  a lot of time and aggravation.
  • Inspect each tile prior to installation.
  • When installing tiles, mix and match tiles from different cartons for a natural look.
  • If you are installing mosaic wall tiles in a shower, it is necessary to install a waterproof membrane.
  • Install any trim or profile strips before installing the mosaic wall tile.
  • Modified thin-sets are generally appropriate for mosaic wall tile installations. Pre-mixed thin-sets are not appropriate for bathroom installations, and should not be used for mosaics featuring glass wall tiles.
  • Follow all manufacturer’s instructions when applying modified thin-set and grout.

So Here’s What We Did

  1. First step was to come up with a plan of where these tiles were going to be placed on the walls.

With the plan in place, we began our kitchen back-splash install by adding the first tile in the closest centre point of the wall, keeping in mind that the last tiles in each row would be wider than half a tile.

Tip: Always stop and check to make sure your tiles are level.

There were some moments in this installation process where we had to cut a mosaic tile sheet from the back with a utility knife. With this type of tile, a wet saw with a  diamond blade was used to cut through the tiles.

Setting material was  applied to substrate while using the notched side of a V-Notched trowel. Using the flat side of trowel, we smoothed out all ridges to achieve a consistent, even (1/8 inch) coverage.

Now comes the fun part!

We applied glass  mosaic sheets, mesh-side down, firmly into the freshly spread setting material while mixing and matching from assorted sell units to achieve a consistent variation. Using a rubber float to gently press the tile into the adhesive to ensure  a complete contact. Spacers where also used to maintain a set distance between the mosaic tile sheets.

We marked measurement marks on the back of the sheets of tile in order to install the mosaic tile around  the light fixtures and electrical sockets.  Once the tiles where in place, we then measured the gaps around the sockets and used leftover pieces to fill in the gaps.

Spacers were removed once the adhesive had set.  Tiles were wiped with a clean sponge to remove any residual adhesive.

A premium penetrating sealer is recommended for a natural look referred by the manufacturers instructions  and was applied onto the stone only.

After 24 hours, a mix of non-sanded tile grout was applied with a rubber float. Afterwards, the grout was evened out by wiping the tile with a wet sponge in a circular motion. Residual grout was cleaned with a clean sponge within 5-10 minutes of grout application.

After 12 hours, any remaining haze was polished off using a dry cloth.

Project- Door Installation By Don Of All Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

It always makes me chuckle when a client that has never installed a door believes that ” A Door Is Just A Door Right?” “It should be a breeze and shouldn’t take long at all.” I am here to tell you, yes it should be a breeze  but in a lot of cases, it’s not that simple.

This door install was a challenge but at the end of the day, it got done with fantastic results!

For this project, the original front door including the storm door and brick molding was removed. The original framing around the door was also removed because the home  owner  ordered  a new door with  brick to brick measurement’s . Interesting fact: when the homeowner originally took measurements for the new door, what he received was a brand new beautiful front door that was 3 1/2 inches too short.

Tip: If you’re thinking of replacing a door in  your home and you feel uncomfortable about taking the measurements, have the installer come and take them for  you. In most cases this cost is included in the purchase price of the door. This saves you TIME, MONEY and  AGRIVATION.

So here’s a perfect example of trouble shooting skills that  saves the day.

Due to the fact the door was 3 1/2 inches to short, we had to build out the frame to make it fit. The new door was put in the  opening and shimmed in order for it to stay in place.

Next we leveled and plumed the door making sure that it was square. Once this part of the process was completed, we then moved forward with installing all the hardware  and did a test  by opening and closing the door to make sure it worked  correctly.

Next step, we installed the brick molding on the exterior of the door. Exterior caulk was added and applied all around the brick mold and checking that all gaps were properly sealed.

In this case, we didn’t have to apply the low expansion spray foam or interior and the homeowner was going to do this part himself.
