Brick Pillars

These pillars were in very good condition considering the age of this  75 year old home.

“How Do I Pick A Back Splash?”

There is a wide variety of modern back splashes that you can choose from. In addition, it may become very confusing when choosing back splashes that fit well with the design of your kitchen and the other finishes. As a result, it is of paramount importance to come up with a criterion for selecting tile backs plashes for your kitchen if you want it to look perfect. Below are some tips that can help you in selecting back splashes for your kitchen.

Choosing a Tile Design and the Materials that You Like best

There is a huge variety of incredible and unique looking tile on the market today that you can choose from. Ceramic choices again range in copper and other type metal tiles, stone and porcelain tiles, and glazed tiles. Keep in mind of what type of tile finishes  you are looking for in your kitchen.  Matte finishes are a great product for a kitchen that is well-lit where as shiny finishes can amplify even the smallest amount of lighting in a room adding that visual quality of any kitchen. Choices of shiny tile finishes can add an extra glimmer and life to the kitchen. Porcelain back splash tiles, glazed and stainless brands are just a few with shiny finishes available. Before you make any decision, ask your supplier if they have taken home samples so you can have a better look at home to see if they would match with your other kitchen finishes.

Choosing A Colour That Matches The Other Colours In Your Kitchen

Always try to pick a back splash that matches the color of your kitchen cabinets. If your kitchen cabinets are white, choose tiles of a lighter color and if they are dark, choose tiles that are dark. If you choose a contrasting color, your kitchen will look too busy and confusing, losing its aesthetic value in the process. Choosing a matching color serves to link the tile back splash and the cabinets, giving them more prominence and hierarchy in the design.

Tiles Should  Sit Well In Terms of the Scale, Proportion and Dimensions of the Room

Large tiles in a small kitchen can distort the proportions in the room making it to appear smaller than it is. On the other hand, tiles that are too small will have no impact in a large kitchen. In addition, they are likely to make the roof to appear very busy. A good size for tiles is one that commands its space and acts in support with the other design elements to create a complete design.

Keep Away From the “Too Busy” Look

For a contemporary kitchen,  select a neutral tile design that acts as a back drop for smaller kitchen utensils and appliances such as coffee makers, kettles and so forth. A neutral design lasts longer as compared to a fancy design that will be quickly outdated as more designs are created and styles and tastes change. A neutral look can allow you to sell your house easily if you decide to list it in future.

If you’re looking to jazz up the look of  your kitchen, modern back splashes make a great design element that will make your kitchen the envy of your neighbours. If you master the criteria of selecting them, the design of your kitchen will be unprecedented and your kitchen will appear lively.

Getting the Exterior of your Home Ready for Winter

icecles

Just a few tips on how to keep your home’s exterior “winterize” for the upcoming winter months:

Things to do before the cold weather starts Outside the Home:

– Check the gutter systems outside your home. Be mindful for any broken or leaking gutters, and repair them as soon possible. Clear out any leaves and other debris that tend to collect over the summer and fall seasons. Doing this will reduce the risks of leaks and blockages during freezing weather.

– Insulate any water pipes in exposed places.

– Make sure the roof is in good condition. Check for loose or missing tiles and for any cracks in the chimney. If you’ve been putting off the task replacing the shingles over the last few years, well now’s a good time to get them replaced. Hire a professional roofing contractor to patch up any gaps and replace shingles.

– Central Air conditioning systems : Take a hose with the spray head set to “jet” or the highest pressure you have and clean the fan blades and condensing coils of clear of debris and dirt. Left unprotected the condensing unit can be damaged by wet leaves and debris that contribute to rusting and freezing of internal components. Although these units are designed for outdoor use, covering them with a breathable waterproof cover made for that purpose will extending the life and efficient performance of the unit.

– Exterior Faucets
Commonly Known as hose bibs or sill-cocks, the exterior faucet needs to have its water supply turned off inside the house, and you also need to drain water from it by opening up the exterior faucet. You may also want to consider an insulated cover for the hose bib. Your garden hoses should be disconnected from the sill cocks or outside faucets and drained if stored outside.

– Any outdoor furniture and garden accessories, lighting, should be stored in a dry place such a shed or a garage. If you lack storage space and have the room, you may even use space in your basement to protect your items from the winter elements.

Is A “Free Estimate” Really FREE????

free estiamte pic

There’s a ton of businesses out there that provide their potential clients a “Free Estimate” or “Free Quote” in order to earn that clients business. These types of services put the client in a powerful position and gives them much variety on who to use for their services BEFORE they buy! It’s a good thing as a consumer to get out there and get as many quotes as you feel  comfortable with before you plan to use these services in your home or business. Sometimes these free estimates may be too high or too low. Some “Inflated” estimates are just that,  “Inflated” and low estimates may just be too good to be true when you get the invoice for added expenses that weren’t included in that price once the project is finished.   So how do you know which estimate  to use?

Being in the home renovation industry, I can tell you my clients do get free estimates yes, but estimates in reality are not really free. My time is money but I am willing to invest and educate  myself and my clients  with what is to be involved in their project to the best of my ability, and to better build a trusting relationship and to give them the best price for them. From, my experience these are the concerns and direction as to what’s involved in my Free Estimates;

–  Booking the time to meet a client

– Going to their home or business involves  gas, time and kilometers on vehicle

– Spending as much time together with a client during personal one consultation

– Understanding, Communicating and recording what exactly what the client needs and expectations are

– Assessing the project to be done. Example- Bathroom renovation: Any water damage, mold, or structural issues with floor, walls, etc. issues  that can be seen externally?

– Sometimes, a room looks great on the outside but once you start pulling tiles off to be replaced, there more issues that you find that you didn’t even know existed which extends your budget, time and scope of the project

– Going out and finding what materials are going to cost and  doing your research at the best price for your customer

– Figuring out a date when project is to begin and to be  completed by.

– Creating a contract between  client and business

And the list goes on and on. So as you can see. From a business prospective, a Free Estimate for us as a business is not really free but again it’s the cost of doing business and great for your potential client and it shows that your honest, experienced, knowledgeable, organized and have a mutual understanding between you and your client as far as what is to be involved into to project from start to finish.

Benefits of Contracts

Contracts

A  contract is a renovator’s most important tool.

Having it “in writing,” is what  homeowners today expect from a  professional renovator .

A written contract protects homeowners as wells as  their investment in their home, and gives an

indication that their renovator is legitimate and does business in a professional manner.

As a professional renovator, the benefits of  using a written contract,  automatically  set yourself apart from fly-by-night or

underground operators. The best way to push “those people” out of the marketplace

is to show your clients  what it takes to “do it right” and be professional.

A good, solid contract is also the foundation for a positive renovation experience

for both you and your clients. It helps build their confidence and your relationship.

Most importantly, it helps to prevent any confusion,  misunderstandings and false expectations

that can lead to a breakdown in your relationship and cause issues with the project.

“Renovation” covers a lot of different projects, done

by many different types of companies. Whether you

are a one-person operation doing small repair and

renovation jobs, or you run a large design-building

crew company  hired  to do an upscale complete whole-house

remodeling, you need a contract.

We welcome any  stories  you’d like to share on our blog on today’s blog: Benefits of Contracts!
