We wanted to start off by thanking Carmela and Angela, two very special and dear friends who volunteered their time including donating their special flavoured teas, china, food and for beautifully setting up the table arrangements for our special Helping Hands Women’s High Tea Event.
We started things off with a variety of dainty finger sandwiches. Of course, high tea wouldn’t be complete without the traditional scones with clotted cream and preserves!
An assortment of mini butter tarts, mini cupcakes, cakes and cookies including the classic Dutch Butter Cookies and so much more were beautifully displayed on our tables!
There was no charge for this event but we asked each guest to donate gifts for the women and children who are staying in the shelter and help make this Christmas a little better for them.
What an incredible experience spending a few hours together, enjoying company, delicious teas, sweet and savory treats and helping women and children fleeing from violence have a special Christmas this year.
Our prize table was filled with a variety of prizes donated by friends, family and local businesses from all over Durham Region. Tickets were sold at this event in order to raise funds and 100% of the proceeds went to benefiting Herizon House.

When remodelling a kitchen consider a back splash as part of your upgrades. Back splashes are a durable wall covering that protects your walls from water resulting in stains and molds. A kitchen is a high traffic area where most food preparation is made and is most likely come into contact with water and greasy foods spatters. Back splashes not only serve as protective barrier from these elements, back splashes also play an important role in the kitchen’s décor by harmonizing the various elements of design. Modern back splashes are an important link that completes a bigger picture and the over all look with your choice of kitchen counter top finish, your kitchen floor product choice and all other finishes. All these elements tie into the overall design compositions that “Screams” beautiful! With the right look and results, your kitchen could quite possibly become one of your favorite rooms in the house!
If your personal preference is a modern back splash for your kitchen remodel, there are a variety of beautiful options available at your disposal. Modern Kitchen Back splash selections range from simple to more detailed and futuristic designs. Types of back splash range from glazed tiles, porcelain tiles, metal tiles, ceramic tiles, varnished wooden tiles, glass tiles and stone tiles. There are a multitude of fancy designs to choose from. Mosaics, a mixture of stone and glass and many other interesting designs are just a few to name.
“How Do I Pick A Back Splash?”
There is a wide variety of modern back splashes that you can choose from. In addition, it may become very confusing when choosing back splashes that fit well with the design of your kitchen and the other finishes. As a result, it is of paramount importance to come up with a criterion for selecting tile backs plashes for your kitchen if you want it to look perfect. Below are some tips that can help you in selecting back splashes for your kitchen.
Choosing a Tile Design and the Materials that You Like best
There is a huge variety of incredible and unique looking tile on the market today that you can choose from. Ceramic choices again range in copper and other type metal tiles, stone and porcelain tiles, and glazed tiles. Keep in mind of what type of tile finishes you are looking for in your kitchen. Matte finishes are a great product for a kitchen that is well-lit where as shiny finishes can amplify even the smallest amount of lighting in a room adding that visual quality of any kitchen. Choices of shiny tile finishes can add an extra glimmer and life to the kitchen. Porcelain back splash tiles, glazed and stainless brands are just a few with shiny finishes available. Before you make any decision, ask your supplier if they have taken home samples so you can have a better look at home to see if they would match with your other kitchen finishes.
Choosing A Colour That Matches The Other Colours In Your Kitchen
Always try to pick a back splash that matches the color of your kitchen cabinets. If your kitchen cabinets are white, choose tiles of a lighter color and if they are dark, choose tiles that are dark. If you choose a contrasting color, your kitchen will look too busy and confusing, losing its aesthetic value in the process. Choosing a matching color serves to link the tile back splash and the cabinets, giving them more prominence and hierarchy in the design.
Tiles Should Sit Well In Terms of the Scale, Proportion and Dimensions of the Room
Large tiles in a small kitchen can distort the proportions in the room making it to appear smaller than it is. On the other hand, tiles that are too small will have no impact in a large kitchen. In addition, they are likely to make the roof to appear very busy. A good size for tiles is one that commands its space and acts in support with the other design elements to create a complete design.
Keep Away From the “Too Busy” Look
For a contemporary kitchen, select a neutral tile design that acts as a back drop for smaller kitchen utensils and appliances such as coffee makers, kettles and so forth. A neutral design lasts longer as compared to a fancy design that will be quickly outdated as more designs are created and styles and tastes change. A neutral look can allow you to sell your house easily if you decide to list it in future.
If you’re looking to jazz up the look of your kitchen, modern back splashes make a great design element that will make your kitchen the envy of your neighbours. If you master the criteria of selecting them, the design of your kitchen will be unprecedented and your kitchen will appear lively.

I just recently made a visit to our local vet to purchase some food for our fury members of the family. As I was waiting to finish my transaction, I noticed a fairly large-sized transparent plastic container on the front counter for all to see. You couldn’t miss this container. I took a closer look and to my surprise, I noticed all kinds of items inside from elastic bands, paperclips, coins, balloons, plastic twist ties and the list goes on and on. After reading the note attached to the container informing pet owners that these were just a few items that were previously surgically removed from Pets who had ingested them. I have to admit I was a little surprised. Just like our own children as infants, we take extra precautions to make sure we Child Proof our home, we have to remember to practice the same safety prevention methods to keep our pets safe as well. Here’s a link to help give you a few tips on keeping your entire family, furry four-legged one’s included, have a safe and happy Holiday season by: Pet MD.
Christmas Tree Tips:
1. Place your Christmas tree in a corner, blocked off from your pet’s wanting eyes. If this doesn’t keep your dog or cat from attempting to jump onto the tree, you can place aluminum foil, a plastic drink bottle filled with nick knacks, or anything else that creates noise on the tree’s bottom limbs to warn you of an impending tree disaster.
2. Tinsel can add a nice sparkling touch to the tree, but make sure you hang it up out of your pet’s reach. Ingesting the tinsel can potentially block their intestines, which is generally only remedied through surgical means.
3. Do not put lights on the tree’s lower branches. Not only can your pet get tangled up in the lights, they are a burning hazard. Additionally, your dog or cat may inadvertently get shocked by biting through the wire.
4. Ornaments need to be kept out of reach, too. In addition to being a choking and intestinal blockage hazard, shards from broken ornaments may injure paws, mouths, or other parts of your pet’s body.
5. For those buying a live Christmas trees this year, keep the area free and clear of pine needles. While they may not seem dangerous, the needles can puncture your pet’s intestines if ingested.
Other Great Holiday Item Tips:
1. Did you know holly, mistletoe, and poinsettia plants are poisonous to dogs or cats? If you normally use these plants to decorate your home, they should be kept in an area your pet cannot reach.
2. Edible tree decorations — whether they be ornaments, or cranberry or popcorn strings — are like time bombs waiting to happen. These goodies are just too enticing and your pet will surely tug at them, knocking down your wonderfully decorated spruce.
3. Burning candles should be placed on high shelves or mantels, out of your pet’s way — there’s no telling where a wagging tail may end up. Homes with fireplaces should use screens to avoid accidental burns.
4. To prevent any accidental electrocutions, any exposed indoor or outdoor wires should be taped to the wall or the sides of the house.
5. When gift wrapping, be sure to keep your pet away. Wrapping paper, string, plastic, or cloth could cause intestinal blockages. Scissors are another hazard, and they should be kept off floors or low tables.
We at petMD don’t want to ruin all your holiday decorating fun. By all means, go crazy sprucing up your home and wrapping presents. But make sure you do in a way that is safe for your pet(s) this holiday season.
