Painting furniture is a great approach to make it more personal. If you are thinking about up-cycling your furniture,  this article from our latest DIY Weekend Projects with Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services will help explain how.

With regards to giving your home a face lift, the difference is all in the details. Painting tired furniture is one of the quickest and most cost effective  approaches to revive a room’s stylistic theme.

This bedroom needed some TLC and we wanted to give it a new fresh cleaner look.  We had to first start by  decluttering, organizing  cleaning, prepping the walls and then painting the room.

Outdated window treatments were replaced along with the original large pine wood bed with with a newer sleeker basic iron headboard. New mattress and box spring were purchased as well.  The only original bedroom furniture left in this room was the was the dresser.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with this dresser except cosmetically,  it didn’t fit in with the planned updated decor and style  we wanted to achieve in this room.

We decided to up-cycle this dresser and give it a face-lift with some chalk paint. And let me tell you….ARE WE EVER GLAD WE DID!

Below are some before and after photos of this dresser up cycling project including steps, tips and our experiences completing it. We hope that this article  inspires you to create something new  and unique as a DIY project for your home.

Step 1-Surface Preparation-Before You Paint

  • Remove any removable elements like hardware, shelves, drawers.
  • Run your hand across the piece to find any rough patches that might need sanding (but you do NOT need to sand the entire piece when using Chalk Paint–even if it’s varnished!).
  • Fill any holes with wood glue.
  • Even if your furniture piece appears to be clean, it will still be covered in oils from hands.  So, make sure to give it a once over with some warm soapy water.  we just used a mild dish-soap, followed up with a final pass of clear water, so we didn’t leave behind any soapy residue.  Then, just allow ample dry time before applying your first coat of paint.
  • Edge off any sections that won’t be painted using painter’s tape (like the inside of drawers).

Step 2-Choosing Your Brand of  Decorative Chalk Paint

For this particular project, we purchased the Rust-Oleum Brand-Chalked Ultra Matt in Linen White. Ultra Matte Paint creates a matte finish that dries to a velvety smooth finish. It transforms and rejuvenates furniture and home décor, creating a unique one of a kind look.

Product Overview
  • Easy to use – No prepping or priming required
  • Use on wood, metal, ceramic, canvas and more
  • Water based for easy clean up

Step 3-  Our Brush of Choice-The Nour Craft 1 ½ inch Premium Oval Brush

The 1.5 inch (37mm) Premium Oval Brush is a professional polyester brush for use with all paints and wax. This brush is ideal for spreading wax because of the density and firmness of the filaments and is best suited for application on medium-sized objects. In addition, the oval shape provides greater coverage.

Product Overview

  • Dyed, tipped and flagged polyester filaments
  • High density of filaments (increased paint pick-up & release)
  • Fine tips for smooth finish
  • Firm stiffness (excellent for wax application)
  • Oval Handle
  • Oval Brush

Good To Know Tip-How To Apply a Chalk Finish Paint

Practice painting a scrap board before tackling a project. When layering different paint colors for a distressed finish, apply a heavier base coat than top coat. Work quickly — chalk-finish paint dries fast  and immediately remove any particles in the wet paint.

Good To Know Tip-When Chalk Paint Becomes Too Thick…

When applying the chalk paint, we found after time the paint got thick and we ran into problems with unevenness on how the paint laid down on the wood. This was a concern because this dresser got very streaked with brush lines and we were disappointed on how this project was turning out so far.
In this case we corrected this issue by using a damp sponge and carefully smoothed out the imperfections after a few hours.
We recommend separating a portion of the paint to be used and thinning the paint by simply adding a little water to it.
Note: When painting make sure room temperature is not to cold because it enhanced the streaking problem.
We then realized that it would most likely  take two to three coats of chalk paint to finish this job.
It’s a really good product if you know what to expect……like all good things in life it takes a little time and effort but in the end you will have a beautiful piece of
furniture.

Step 5-Adding a Protective Top Coat

Since this piece was still being used as a dresser, we chose the Rust-oleum Brand Chalked Protective Top Coat  to add an extra protection against any possible spills or accidents.

Rust-Oleum Chalked Protective Topcoat

Product Overview:

  • Adds a protective, sealed clear topcoat to any chalked surface
  • Ultra-matte, smooth finish enhances color and durability
  • Goes on in 1 to 2 coats with no need to reapply

We found that this product worked like it said it would. This is a good sealer for the chalked paint. We also wanted to mention that this product  does darken the colors a bit.

Absolutely Love the new look this older dresser now gives in this bedroom!
Well this DIY up-cycling dresser project was a lot of fun and and a great learning experience to complete. Ok, so it 4 coats of chalk paint and a little bit of patience to achieve the look we wanted but we are so happy  we made the effort.  We absolutely love the results and the new fresh clean look it adds to this bedroom. Best of all-it was an affordable alternative!

Three More Reasons Why You Should Consider Up Cycling

Number 1-Saves You Money

The number 1 reason for choosing  to upcycle furniture is clearly that it saves you money. We live in a throw- away generation whereby individuals rush to simply throw away undesirable things; the perfect opportunity to get your hands on something to give a makeover!

Number 2-Customize

Why purchase new when you can make something totally customized for your home? No one else will have the same and you can give your creative  imagination and energy a chance to run wild.

Number 3-Good for the Environment

It’s good for the environment –Instead of trashing unwanted pieces consider recycling them as something else and turning them into something you love is the way to go. Landfills are  wrecking havoc with our environment so next time you make a trip to dump, think “can I re-purpose this?”

Basement Painting Tips-Don of all Trades

Basement Painting Tips-Don of all Trades
Photos provided by Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Painting your basement  can have a major effect on how the space looks and feels. It’s astonishing what a fresh coat of  paint can do when attempting to spruce up a room, and your basement no different.  Unfortunately,  bringing a basement to life  can be somewhat more difficult than other rooms in your home.

Basement Painting Tips-Don of all Trades
Photos provided by Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Numerous basements are just utilized as storage areas, but wouldn’t it be wonderful  to use your space as a home office, a basement gym, or a room your whole family can enjoy?

Below are some photos of a recent basement project our team at Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services  completed along with our 6 painting tips that we hope will inspire  and help to make your basement a friendly and happy place.

Tip 1-  Use Lighter Paint Hues

This isn’t as complicated  as it sounds.  Locate the places that get a lot of natural or artificial light and paint these areas with lighter colours. The whole point  here is to focus on the areas that are already accepting light and keeping the lighter paint colours  out of the darker regions of your basement.

Tip 2- Use Rich Colours

Applying rich colours will help give your basement an “open” feel. Numerous homeowners aim to achieve this with light colours, for example, white or yellow, however using a richly saturated paint choice like a Benjamin Moore Interior Latex Pearl Base Paint in Whale Gray Colour code#  2134-40   can be more effective than choosing an poorly saturated yellow paint as an option.

Tip 3- Reduce the Number of Colours

Using  a large number of colours can overwhelm your room. Interior  designers suggest utilizing the 60-30-10 standard to shield your room from having an excessive number of colours.

  • 60% of the room should be the dominant color.
  • 30% should be the secondary color.
  • 10% should be used for accents.

For this project we made it simple. 2 colours were chosen to paint this basement space. A Pearl base Whale Grey hue  for the walls and Semi Gloss White Interior paint for the ceilings and trim. White window treatments were used as accents to finish off this now organized, fresh and clean space.

Photos provided by Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Tip 4- Add Extra Lighting

Light helps give the illusion that a room is bigger (and much cleaner) than the actual space. You can easily create this effect  by incorporating a table or floor lamp.  Track lighting or lights suspended from your ceilings can also be a simple and affordable  approach to include extra lighting.

Installing recessed lighting can involve more work and more expensive as an option however,  it adds a updated modern look and feel to a room.

A basic and affordable solution to expand the light in your basement space is through the use of mirrors.  Mirrors help “ricochet” the light around the room and give the illusion the space is larger.

For this basement painting project, the home owner decided to keep all  original light fixtures and pot lights but decided to replace existing light bulbs  with Ecosmart 60W  Soft White  LED Light BulbsThe EcoSmart A19 8.5-Watt LED Light Bulb can be used to replace a traditional 60W incandescent A19 light bulb. This LED light bulb has an output of 800 Lumens and can last up to 10,000 hours, saving you up to $56.65 per bulb over the bulb’s life. The bulb is designed for indoor use and features an A-line shape and medium base. EcoSmart A19 bulbs are perfect for your living room, bedroom, kitchen or any place in your home where you would use a standard incandescent light bulb. These bulbs give off a lot of light and were the perfect solution to  brighten up this basement.

Tip 5- Select A Glossy Finish

Because basements have a tendency to be damp, glossy finishes are an excellent paint choice and more suited to resist stains and moisture.  Remember to make sure your walls are smooth and clean before you apply the paint as glossier finishes tend to show imperfects more than other paint finishes.

Tip 6- Use Concrete Paint on Concrete Walls

Using concrete paint is a little different than regular wall paint because it generally requires more paint to cover the surface. When painting concrete surfaces keep in mind that it can take over a week to finish the job however, your concrete walls will be protected with the proper finish.

Winter season interior painting makes great sense!

House painting in the midst of the colder months isn’t  a great deal of an issue.  Actually, professional  painters paint throughout the winter seasons  all the  time. Here are four reasons why you should also:

  1.  You won’t have issues with stickiness, which can occur in summer. A damp or humid situation will back off the dry time for paint. It additionally makes it physically all the more difficult in a hot situation.
  2. Tradesmen  may not be  as occupied and are frequently available  for winter work. Their schedules may be more open to a accommodate appointment bookings months in advance of the spring and summer seasons.
  3. There is a good possibility that you may be able to negotiate a better price for the project to be completed. Amid the off-season a Tradesman may bring down their costs in order to get your work.
  4. Painting now will maximize the value of your home, more so if you are  considering the thought of putting it on the market for sale in the spring.

A Staircase That Makes A Statement

Staircase Makeover-Don Of All Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

At Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services, we are always contacted by clients to assist them with unique and special projects around their home.  This striking  staircase  will certainly make an unforgettable statement when family and friends come to celebrate  over the Christmas Holidays.

In many houses, the staircase is the first architectural element of the home’s interior that guests see, so homeowners want it to be appealing.

A banister handrail on a staircase gets touched a lot. As people walk up and down the stairs, they often grasp the handrail whether they need to or not. The handrail can give you a sense of security as you move along the stairway, but over time, the oils from your skin can damage the paint, and the simple act of sliding your hand along the handrail can wear away the paint. Painting the banister handrail can return it to its original state.

Simple fact is, you can’t have a two-story home without a staircase. However, the fact that your staircase needs to be redecorated every once in a while is often overlooked. A decorated and refinished staircase can offer a complete change without even doing that much. We can’t forget the wear and tear, that no matter what, will happen to our beautiful stairs over time. So it’s crucial to give them a little face lift from time to time. Also, a redecorated staircases can command attention and thus become the focal point of your foyer or hallway.

General Repair might include just simply refinishing your wooden stairs for a new look. Or, perhaps all you need is fresh carpet for your carpeted staircase, and of course you could always change your carpet staircase to a wooden one as well. But if you are looking to do a little more, we have a few tips and ideas for you.

Always Do Your Research

We made a trip to our local Whitby Shores  Décor  Centre and got assistance from the  Benjamin Moore  Colour Consultant team. They gave expert advice on the type of paint to choose for this particular project with results our client were looking for. We chose the Benjamin Moore  Cloud White for the balusters. The  colour of choice for the Banister/Handrail was to be painted in  Espresso with a finishing coat of Satin Varnish Clear Coat.  View our slide show below to see the before and after photos.

Cleaning and Restoring a Weathered Deck-Don of All Trades

This weathered deck got a transformation into a beautiful and inviting living space again with some advanced preparation, repair work and an application of good quality deck stain to block the sun’s harmful rays and to protect the wood. Completing this deck with a professional finish. For this project we used a solid stain to hide any mismatching boards and  any imperfections.

Clean & Restore a Weathered Deck-Don Of All Trades
Cleaning and staining a weathered deck extends its life.

Preparing and Cleaning the Deck

Step 1

Our team at Don Of All Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services started off this project by removing all furniture, plants and grills. The deck was swept clean and surrounding plants and shrubs located around the perimeter were covered with plastic.

Step 2

An inspection of the condition of the deck was done looking for any loose, split, popping nails and rotting boards  to be replaced. For areas with splintering, 80 grit sandpaper would be used to sand any rough areas of the wood.

Step 3

A power washer was used to help remove any loose flaking stain, dirt and debris.

Step 4

We visited our local Whitby Shores Benjamin Moore Store and purchased the Benjamin Moore REMOVE (315) wood cleaner and followed the manufacturer’s instructions for the correct cleaner to water ratio. REMOVE was sprayed onto the entire deck. The deck was scrubbed  with a long-handled scrub brush to loosen the dirt, grime debris mold and mildew. We then rinsed off the deck.

Cleaning & Restoring a Weathered Deck-Don Of All Trades

Product Features Include:

-Removes both latex and oil stains

-Fast acting formula

-Removes clear finishes through SOLID COLOUR STAINS

-Concentrated Formula

-Clean up soap  and water

-Recommended Exterior

 Step 5

The second phase of  preparing this deck was applying  another product called Benjamin Moore Restore.  This product helps to restore old weathered wood. It’s a bleach flee formula and is gentle to wood and the environment. Restore also helps bring back the natural grain in the wood and helps the wood accept the new stain.  Restore  was sprayed onto the entire deck. The deck was scrubbed  with a long-handled scrub brush to loosen the dirt, grime debris mold and mildew. We then rinsed off the deck. We allowed some time for the deck to dry out before the staining process.

Good To Know:

Be prepared to spend most of your  day completing this process depending on the size of your deck. This deck was approximately 350 square feet and this project took  approximately 9 hours to complete.

Applying the Stain

Good To Know

If you have near by  plants and shrubs around your deck, Don Of All Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services recommends to cover  them with plastic in order to protect them from any splattering or dripping stain.  Once the staining is completed, remove the plastic from the plants and shrubs.

Cleaning and Restoring a Weathered Deck-Don Of All Trades

Our client’s choice of stain to be applied on this deck was the Benjamin Moore Arborcoat Exterior Stain Brand Natural Cedar Tone Solid Stain.  Solid stain was used for this rather than the semi-solid due to the fact that this deck had been stained 3 times in the past with a solid stain.  2 Gallons were used to complete this 1 coat project.  Recommended curing time: Let the stain cure for at-least 1 week but light traffic only after 2 days.

Our experience applying the Arborcoat Exterior Waterborne Exterior Stain was that this product had a much better finish on the floor planks, the tack  up time was nice with a quick flash drying time and laid down very nicely. The end results were fantastic and our clients was extremely pleased at the results.

So what is the difference between  Semi-Transparent, Semi-Solids and Solid Stains?

Semi-Transparent— Lightly pigmented, these stains impart more color the surface than wood toner stains, while still letting the wood grain to be seen.

Semi-Solids—Semi-solid/semi-opaque finish masks most of the wood grain, but allows some of the wood texture to be seen.

Solids— Choose these stains if you want a rich, vibrant opaque finish that completely hides the wood grain while allowing very little of the wood texture to show through.

More Handy Tips:
  • Deck cleaner solution and deck restore products are very corrosive and be mindful of any splashes against your home as it may cause damage including to  any surrounding plants. Would recommend doing this project in the early spring, before the plants come up.
  • Avoid staining the deck in direct sunlight. The stain will dry too quickly and the decking boards will not have time to absorb the stain.
  • Use a long-handled scrub brush to help scrub the deck with solution.
  • Pay close attention to the weather for the week.
  • Wear safety glasses, rubber gloves, close-toed shoes and protective clothing.
  • Stir the stain thoroughly. Avoid shaking the container because bubbles will develop and it will be hard to get a smooth finish. Pour the stain into a paint tray.

If you are considering selling your home there are few  home improvement projects that have as great an impact as a new coat of exterior paint on your home.  Modifying or at the very  least,  refreshing the exterior paint on your home completely revitalize the look of your home and makes it more attractive to potential buyers.

It’s the first thing buyers notice when viewing a home and exterior paint also…

  • adds value
  • is attractive to a buyer
  • painting is a relatively inexpensive repair that goes a long way
  • fresh coat of paint goes a long way with buyers
  • paint and flooring are 2 areas that buyers highly evaluate when home shopping

Fresh paint adds curb-appeal. Even if your home is well-taken care of,  chipped paint and a not so well-taken care of exterior could give potential buyers the illusion that the interior / structure is not well taken care of and scare people away.

That being said, if you’re planning to put your house on the market in the near future, you’ll also want to consider which shades will attract the broadest range of buyers.
