DIY Project-How To Create A Memory Wall-Don of all Trades

http://www.donofalltrades.ca

There is nothing more exciting than transforming  a space in your home from plain old ordinary to something beautiful, unique and extraordinary.  If your walls could tell a story what would that story be? Below is a recent project Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services  completed from start to finish. We have to say that  our team but most importantly our client,  loved the results!

We took this small plain hallway, landing and staircase to the next level by adding special personal touches and turned it into a Memory Wall that will be enjoyed for years to come.  We hope this project will give you some insight and inspiration if you are considering  DIY Memory Wall of your own in your home.

Good to know tip…

You have to start with a perfectly smooth surface to end up with perfectly painted walls or woodwork.

Step 1-Surface Preparation-Before You Paint
  • Remove any removable elements like railings, door handles, light fixtures, picture frames and so on.
  • Even if your steps, railings,  walls, ceilings, trim, doors and baseboards  appear to be clean, it will still be covered in dirt, grime and oils from hands.  So, make sure to give it a once over with some warm soapy water.  we just used a mild dish-soap, followed up with a final pass of clear water, so we didn’t leave behind any soapy residue.  Then, just allow ample dry time before applying your first coat of paint.
  • Have a good look at the conditions of your walls and ceilings to find any rough patches,  holes or damage  that might need re patching,  sanding and repair accordingly.
Step 2-Make Any Necessary Repairs

The original railing was in need of repair. A new stair newel post, new top rail and mounting hardware was installed. Instead of replacing the stairs with new ones, broken steps were repaired, finished grade plywood was installed to eliminate creaking and to help add more strength to the steps.

Good to know tip…

Are the walls in your home in need of a fresh coat but not sure what color to choose?   Talk  with the paint experts to find out what colors are trending in 2018.

Step 3 – Selecting the Right Paint and Varnish

The steps were painted with 2 coats of a Charcoal Shade and finished off with 2 coats of water based varnish satin coat with #Serenity brand #Cottagepaint which was purchased at the Benjamin Moore Whitby Shores Decor Centre.

Although making the decision of trying something completely different by painting these steps a dark color was a difficult one, this client was extremely pleased at how they came out. Walls were patched and sanded. Even the front hallway closest got fresh coat of paint inside and out. Walls were painted in a shade of grey, all ceilings and trim were painted in a white.

Good to know tip…

Remember that stairways and halls must have good general lighting for safety. To prevent accidents, stairs should be lit from top to bottom with switches in both places. For safety in hallways, place lighting fixtures every 8 to 10 feet (2.4 to 3.0 m). Tie in the fixtures you choose by matching your foyer chandelier or pendant with close-to-ceiling fixtures for hallways and smaller chain hung fixtures for stairways.

Step  4 – Choosing Light Fixtures

The original outdated lighting was replaced with  more modern energy efficient  Hampton Bay 12 inch brushed nickel led flush-mount light fixtures.  These ceiling light fixtures are engineered to save you money, and they are designed to look great. This collection is a modern, elegant style featuring a brushed nickel finish and frosted glass shade that diffuses the light so that there are no shadows or dark spots. These ceiling lights are built with steel to look great and save you money for many years while blending nicely with the decor of your home.

Good to know…

Applying a wall decal can be a quick and easy way to add a new style to any room or space.

Step  5 – Choosing The Right Words To Tell A Story

We did some research on line and found a great website that offered a huge variety of non-permanent  beautiful wall lettering  quotes that was delivered right to their door.  Measurements were made prior to making an order to ensure it would fit the space on the wall it was going to be applied to.   Our client chose the  MagicWall Family Memories Wall Lettering  in colour-black-48×13 inches (122 x 33 cm) size to help tell their family’s story.  This beautiful wall quote was super easy to apply and was applied to the right side of the wall above the hand railing.

Good to know…

One of the most common reasons people develop their photos in black and white today is because it lends a certain timeless quality to the images.

Step 6 –  Memories With Meaning

These photos helped tell the story of what is important to our client.  This special project was completed  to create a space to tell a story ranging from important moments from the the past to present.

Special moments of youth, dating, marriage,  birthdays, holidays, friends and family members, home, pets and children growing up.  A total of 40 photos were developed online through  Wal-Mart Photo Centre.  All photos were reprinted  in 8×10 sizes (at a very reasonable price) on the wal-mart photo centre website in black in white to keep the theme the same and to give them all a timeless quality to the images.

A total of 40  Nikolai 8 x 10″ Black photo frames were purchased on the Walmart.ca  website (again at a very reasonable price) and were conveniently shipped to our clients door within 4 days of ordering.  To help keep the damage to the walls to a minimum, Command Brand Damage-Free Picture Hanging Strips were used to hang all photos.  These strips were a perfect solution to prevent filling in 40 nail holes in the walls later on in the future.

These walls will be telling this client’s story for years to come and will be enjoyed by neighbors, friends and family members who come to visit. We are extremely pleased at the results,  the story and special meaning  this Memory Wall tells. It’s quite simply “Beautiful.”

DIY Weekend Projects-Turning An Old Dresser Into A Coffee Station -Don of all Trades

Our office was in desperate need of a new piece of furniture that was going to act as coffee station but also function as extra  storage space.  One of our team members here at Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services who also  happens to be a member of the Facebook BLACK MARKET – VarageSale site, found this old solid wooden dresser and got it for a steal  at just $50!  As a fast, economical way to breathe new life into this old piece, we  gave it 3 coats of chalk paint and we absolutely love the results.  Thinking of  up-cycling your tired furniture with paint and colour? Follow these easy DIY instructions for how to prep and paint wood furniture with beautiful results in just 1 weekend.

Surface Preparation-Before You Paint

  • Remove any removable elements like hardware, shelves, drawers.
  • Run your hand across the piece to find any rough patches that might need sanding (but you do NOT need to sand the entire piece when using Chalk Paint–even if it’s varnished!).
  • Fill any holes with wood glue.
  • Even if your furniture piece appears to be clean, it will still be covered in oils from hands.  So, make sure to give it a once over with some warm soapy water.  we just used a mild dish-soap, followed up with a final pass of clear water, so we didn’t leave behind any soapy residue.  Then, just allow ample dry time before applying your first coat of paint.
  • Edge off any sections that won’t be painted using painter’s tape (like the inside of drawers).

Chalk Paint-Our Choice for This Project

So what exactly is chalk paint? Chalky-finish paint is a latex-based paint to which a fine granular powder has been added—often Plaster of Paris. After the paint dries, the granules create a matte finish. Brush strokes and imperfections become part of the look, making it a forgiving finish to apply. The finish can be sanded in places to create a distressed look or waxed for either an aged look or more satin finish than paint alone.

We’ve used this Rust-Oleum® Chalked Ultra Matte Paint in Linen White  product on a previous project in the past and loved the results.

A little more info about Chalked Ultra Matte Paint

Rust-Oleum® Chalked Ultra Matte Paint is a thicker paint that creates an ultra matte finish with superior adhesion and coverage.  It rejuvenates furniture and home décor with timeless elegance.  It can be painted or distressed, giving any project a one of a kind look with a vintage feel.

Product Overview:

  • Easy application
  • Indoor use only
  • Dries to a velvety smooth finish
  • Easily distressed to create a vintage look

Best Paint Brush for Chalk Paint

The brush that you choose is super important, as it will affect the way your paint goes on. Our favorite brushes to use are the Nour Craft 1 1/2 inch Premium Oval Brush. Keep in mind that chalk paint does show brush strokes, which is part of it’s charm, but that also means that you want to keep your brush strokes going in the same direction.  It really helps if you’re painting a wood piece because you can just follow the grain of the wood.  When you’re finished painting, you can clean your brushes with warm water and a mild soap.

Nour Craft 1 1/2 inch Premium Oval Brush. The 1.5 inch (37mm) Premium Oval Brush is a professional polyester brush for use with all paints and wax. This brush is ideal for spreading wax because of the density and firmness of the filaments and is best suited for application on medium-sized objects. In addition, the oval shape provides greater coverage.

Product Overview:

  • Dyed, tipped and flagged polyester filaments
  • High density of filaments (increased paint pick-up & release)
  • Fine tips for smooth finish
  • Firm stiffness (excellent for wax application)
  • Oval Handle
  • Oval Brush

Good to know Tip-How To Apply a Chalk Finish Paint

Practice painting a scrap board before tackling a project. When layering different paint colors for a distressed finish, apply a heavier base coat than top coat. Work quickly — chalk-finish paint dries fast  and immediately remove any particles in the wet paint.

Our First Coat of Chalk Finish Paint Applied

Good To Know TipADD A LITTLE WATER

As mentioned above, Rust-Oleum® Chalked Ultra Matte Paint  is quite thick, and it’s meant to show brush strokes.  We found  that by  adding a little water to our paint makes the brush strokes a little less noticeable and makes the paint go further.  If you’re going to add water, we would recommend putting a little paint in another container and adding small amounts of water at a time until you have reached your desired consistency.  Also, if you’re painting from the can and the lid is left off for a good amount of time, the paint can thicken even more.  In this case you can simply add a little water to the can and shake it up. Dry time was 1 hour before applying the second coat of chalk paint to this piece.

Third and Final Chalk Finish Paint Coat Applied

Day number 2 was extremely exciting for us as this was the moment were we got a good opportunity to appreciate the benefits of painting this piece with chalk paint. Considering this was a second hand piece that the previous owner had for years, this dresser was in truly good shape.

Adding a Protective Top Coat

Since this piece was being used as a coffee station, we chose the Rust-oleum Chalked Protective Top Coat Brand to add extra protection against any spills or accidents. We found that this product worked like it said it would. This is a good sealer for the chalked paint. We also wanted to mention that this product  does darken the colors a bit.  Over all, we are  very happy with the results.

Rust-Oleum Chalked Protective Topcoat

Product Overview:

  • Adds a protective, sealed clear topcoat to any chalked surface
  • Ultra-matte, smooth finish enhances color and durability
  • Goes on in 1 to 2 coats with no need to reapply

 Painting the Hardware

So we decided to give the drawer hardware a new look by giving them a light sanding and applying  Rust-Oleum®  Brand Spray paint specifically designed for metal surfaces to help give them a new look and to add a little more character to the dresser drawers. Once dry, we added them to the drawers and we have to say our new coffee station is looking good!

Finished Product

Our DIY Weekend Project-Turning An Old Dresser Into A Coffee Station  is finally finished and ready to enjoy! It looks fantastic and we look forward to finding more great deals out there on line to work on in the future. Perhaps the  single most beneficial aspect of chalk painting furniture is that it requires almost no prep work and no priming.  Another plus is that you don’t have to be a perfect painter to do this. In fact, you are SUPPOSED to do criss-cross brush strokes and not straight lines.  Anyone can do this!

DIY Weekend Projects-Turning Something Old Into Something New-Don of all Trades

Regardless of how much we love our furniture, a few pieces tend to begin going into disrepair sooner than others. In other cases, we may go gaga over a new piece of furniture item that will come to replace an older unit in our homes. Whatever the case might be, furniture pieces tend to travel every which way inside numerous homes.

It’s actually sad to discard good quality  furniture that way, yet these pieces  regularly take up excessive amounts of  room when they are no longer useful in our homes. If your furniture is sturdy and still  fully functional, you could sell it to a new home. Unfortunately, a significant number of these house hold items  simply wind up on the curb for garbage day.

Before you toss out your next piece of furniture item, consider  these fantastic DIY ventures that particularly re-purpose old furniture pieces. You’ll wish that you had spared a portion of those things from your old collection. Below are two  weekend DIY projects that we recently completed by up-cycling old pieces we already had around the house to look new again.

Pillar Accent Table Weekend Project No.1

Photo Courtesy of Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Our family has had this piece for over 17 years. We actually purchased this pillar at a home and garden center in the damaged section of the store.  Got a great deal on it and brought it home. This pillar was used as a decorative decor  piece in our home for years. It held a beautiful blue glass vase with an arrangement of large silk sunflowers in it and was showcased in our living room until it ended up in our basement along with our many other collections of pieces that we just didn’t use anymore.  My wife had a hard time deciding on whether to sell it or hold on to it for future use.  During this years HUGE spring cleaning and de-cluttering process, we decided to keep this piece by repairing, up-cycle and giving this piece a new function  and home in the house.  And we’re sure glad we did!

Repairs were made to rebuild a damaged corner.

Our Choice of Paint

We had left over paint from a previous project with great results and decided to use it again on this particular project.   Chalked Ultra Matte Paint creates a matte finish that dries to a velvety smooth finish. It transforms and rejuvenates furniture and home decor, creating a unique one of a kind look.

Why Paint with Ultra Matte Paint in Linen White?

  • Easy to us e – No prepping or priming required
  • Use on wood, metal, ceramic, canvas and more
  • Water based for easy clean up

Three great reasons why we chose this paint to get this DIY weekend project done.

Photo Courtesy of Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

A beautiful custom fit piece of glass was cut and purchased to add more area space to the top of the pillar along with helping to give this piece a new unique one of a kind look and to fit into the new chosen space.

Photo Courtesy of Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Inexpensive self adhesive Non-Slip Stoppers were attached to the top of the pillar to help prevent the glass from slipping.

And voila! Our New Pillar Accent Table is done.  Love the new fresh clean look, new function and home where we can enjoy it for many more years to come!

Seashell Accent Mirror Weekend Project No.2

Photo Courtesy of Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Now this was a fun project to complete. We had an old mirror hanging around and decided to give it a new look that would compliment along side  with our new pillar accent table.

Photo Courtesy of Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

We covered the mirror glass in order to protect  it with the help of painters tape and some paper. Glue and sand was added to the mirror first to help tie it in with the seashells.

Photo Courtesy of Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Once dried, we created a pattern of shells around the mirror to figure out where which shells were going to be placed.

Photo courtesy of Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Many, many seashells and lots of  glue sticks later along with a lot of patience, our seashell accent mirror was finally completed. It was placed above the new pillar accent table in the tiny front foyer area. Love the new look of this small space and being able to turn something old and turning it into something new again.

Old furniture can be an eye sore, but for the crafty, old furniture items are an opportunity to transform the old into something new and delightful. Whether you just want to dress up an old piece or create something entirely new from its parts, just remember that with a little bit of motivation, hard work and imagination, the possibilities are endless.

Less Is More-Get Rid of Your Clutter and Live Better with Don of all Trades

Photo credit of Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

It’s a reality that a lot of us don’t want to admit but I truly believe that we have become a culture drowning on our own possessions. We are quick to take in more and more  (holiday, birthday, sales needs), but we  keep putting off  the time  and energy needed  to get rid of it.

As a result, we fill our homes up with more and more “stuff”.  So in order to try and manage these possessions, we have convinced ourselves into believing the best solution is to seek out organization tools to manage all of it.

So what do we do?  We go out and buy bigger containers or look up on line for more efficient organizational tips and tricks. When it comes down to it, organizing our possessions is just  simply  a temporary solution that  in a nutshell is an action that must be repeated over and over again with time.

A simple way to define organizing? It’s  the act of rearranging.  Let’s face it, we are always on the look out  to find more storage solutions to organize our “stuff”. I know I don’t have time to constantly go out and find new storage solutions. Do you? Additionally, organizing our “stuff” (without removing it) has some other major consequences that are rarely considered:

  • It doesn’t benefit anyone else.  The possession we don’t use just sit on shelves in our attics, garages and basements…even when we know that some of our closest friends and family members could desperately use them.
  • It’s not a solution to our debt problemsWe often don’t want to admit to anyone else or ourselves for that matter that there us an underlying issue that we just buy too much stuff. It doesn’t help when we go out of our way to purchase containers, rent storage units, or even buy a larger home to house it all in when it comes to rearranging out processions.
  • It doesn’t change our desire for more.  All that hard work and effort we put forth by organizing our things into plastic bins, boxes and closets doesn’t change the mindset we have and the desire to purchase more things.
  • It stops us from evaluating our livesWhile the act of rearranging our stuff might cause us to look at each of our possessions, it doesn’t make us stop and truly evaluate them-even more so if we are just placing them into boxes and closing the lids. However, when we consider removing possessions from our home, things start to get a little more serious as the questions of passion, value and what’s truly more important to us start to run through our minds.
  • It doesn’t help clear the path to moving  forward. We all know the “good” feeling both  physically and mentally we get  when we spend weeks organizing rooms in our homes. When you finally take a step back and look at how the room as been cleared and appears to look larger and more clutter free and all your processions now have a  dedicated spot to be stored in. Looks great right? But for how long?   How long before we have to do it all over again?  We make up excuses to keep our processions like- “our house is too small”, or “we don’t make enough money” and “we still can’t find enough time in the day.” Sound familiar? We may have rearranged our stuff…but not the path to move forward in our lives.

Less Is More-Get Rid of Your Clutter and Live Better!

The beneficial part  about the act of physically removing pocessions from our homes helps accomplish us to clear our minds, move forward and just live happier and a healthier life. And the best part of all is that it’s a permanent solution!

On the other hand, the act of removing possessions from our home accomplishes many of those purposes. It is not a temporary solution that must be repeated. It is an action of permanence—once an item has been removed, it is removed completely. Whether we re-sell our possessions, donate them to charity, or give them to a friend, they are immediately put to use by those who need them.

When moving forward with the process of  removing our possessions, it also begins to turn back our desire for more as we find happiness, freedom and an abundance of owning less. And when we remove ourselves from the all-consuming desire to  own more, this enables the opportunity for significant life changes to take place.

As  you move forward to get your home and life organized, challenge yourself to remove the unneeded items in your home.  Rid yourself of the extra weight in a permanent matter.  Carry a garbage bag from room-to-room. See how big of a donation pile you can make. Or help eliminate some-if not all- debt by selling them. Keep in mind that it doesn’t matter so much how you remove them, as long as you do.  It’s so much better to de-own than declutter.

To make a significant change in slowing down the accumulation of things in our homes, we really have to be honest with ourselves and change our mindsets and evaluating our purchases differently. Always keeping in mind that your purchase cost will go  far more than the price on the tag. Each one will also require time, energy and an effort once they enter your home. Before making a purchase, begin asking yourself the following questions below.

  • Is this an item that is really needed?
  • Am I buying this item for the right reasons?
  • Is this new possession going to add more extra work to my life?
  • Is there a place to store this item once I bring it home?

Get Your Home Organized With These 4 Spring Cleaning Tips-Don of all Trades

It’s Time to Get Your Home Organized

Spring is the time of year when everything in nature is changing and promising new life and new hope.  After the long, dark, winter months, spring is literally a breath of fresh air. It’s no wonder we get inspired to carry the freshness of this season into our homes. Spring cleaning is the perfect way to get organized and make your home as lovely as the season itself. Finding the right solution for organizing your home can make such a difference in the appearance and functionality of your home. Below are 4 organizing solutions that can help you clean, organize and rejuvenate you home.

SAY GOOD BYE TO CLUTTER

The decluttering process, for some people, can be on the most stressful first steps in the process organization because they are unsure of where to start and what to get rid of. RELAX AND BREATHE.  Just take it ONE ROOM at a time. There’s no need to worry about trying to get the entire house done it one day. It’s better to take your time and get it all done right then to rush through the process and to end up with unnecessary clutter in your home. This is one of the most important steps in getting organized because it will free up so much extra space in your home. So how do you decide of what to get rid of?  A good rule of thumb is to keep this in mind to go by is this :IF YOU DON’T LOVE IT AND YOU DON’T USE IT, THEN IT’S CLUTTER!  Don’t be afraid to get merciless with this process. The more you declutter the less you will have to clean and the more balanced both mentally and physically your life will be. Discarding and recycling unwanted items will give you so much more space to get neat and organized.

GET STORAGE SAVVY

One of the biggest reasons our homes get out of control with clutter is because we do not have designated places for all our items.  Giving your items a “home” is the best way to get organized and keep it that way. Choosing storage solutions like affordable plastic containers are fantastic because they come in a variety of shapes and sizes.  Wide flat containers are an excellent choice to be used for storing seasonal clothing under a bed. Stack containers in closets for storing shoes and accessories. Use smaller containers to organize the contents in drawers such as pens, note pads, small toys, etc.  Grab a few glass jars and chalk and you now have an adorable way to organize your kitchen pantry. Finally, use hooks wherever needed. Hooks are great in closets to house jewelry and are also perfect in laundry rooms for hanging brooms, mops and ironing boards.

NEVER UNDERVALUE THE POWER OF A SHELF

Consider adding shelves as this is a great way to provide storage in just about any room. Consider the option of using decorative shelving with hooks and pegs in your kitchen for storing mugs, pots and pans or cooking utensils. Add some shelving to a living room to make extra space for books, pictures and other decorative items. And don’t forget that closets could always use a little more space for storage. By simply adding shelving to closets, there is now a designated space to make room for those bulky sweaters, bags, shoes and other personal items.

GLITZ UP THE GARAGE

At times we get so caught up in looking after organizing the inside of the home at we neglect the outside like the garage for example. The garage doesn’t have to be a designated space for parking only. Putting in the time and effort to organize your garage will open up so much great valuable space for storage. Utilize the same concept of organizing the inside of your home for your garage space as well.  Decluttering, using labeled containers, and adding hooks and shelving can turn a garage into a perfectly organized storage space.  Use hooks for hanging jackets, bags, and muddy boots.

It’s time to get organized and there is no better time than spring.  If you follow these helpful tips, your home will feel as fresh as this beautiful spring weather.  You will be ready to sit back, sip some lemonade, and enjoy the season.

Replacing Worn Weather Stripping  Around Doors

Drafts through your front doors don’t  seem as much of a problem in the summer months, but the truth is it can be.  If your weather strip allows a ¼” opening around a door, it’s like a hole in the wall that is 4” x 4”.  Drafts don’t seem as noticeable  the summer months  because the  air flows from cold to warm which is why it’s more noticeable in the winter season. Hot Water Tank Preventative Maintenance Tips

Hot Water Tank Preventative Maintenance

Draining your water heater once a year removes sediment from the tank that can cause it to work harder and cost more to use. Most people have no idea that there water tank requires yearly maintenance up until they start having problems. Following these simple steps will ensure that your water tank will perform at optimum efficiency and give you years of problem free service.

Please note the following Cautions and Warnings listed below:

If you do not feel comfortable doing this work yourself, call a licensed plumber.

  • Be careful, as the water may be very hot.
  • Do not power on without filling with water completely. If you do, the heating element will be damaged.
  • Regular flushing will keep your heater free of debris, but most plumbers caution that if the valve hasn’t been opened in more than five years, it may be best not to attempt turning the handle as the valve may fail.
  • If you do not feel comfortable doing this work yourself, call a licensed plumber.
  • Be careful not to break the drain cock.
  • Note: Read the instructions on the tank for turning off the gas and or electricity. Don’t just do it unless you know what you are doing.
  • Water in your hot water tank can scald you.
  • If you did not allow the water to cool, it will be extremely hot as it leaves the tank.

Step 1:

First, test the pressure-relief valve located on the top or side of the water heater. This valve opens automatically if the pressure inside the tank gets too high. (Excess pressure can actually cause the tank to explode.)

If the valve doesn’t release water when you lift the lever, replace the valve (sold at home centers and hardware stores). Replacement is simple; turn off the water, drain the tank, unscrew the discharge pipe and then unscrew the old valve.

Wrap the threads of the new valve with sealant tape and screw it in. If your valve is several years old and has never been tested, it might leak after you test it. In that case, replace the valve.

Step 2:

Then turn off the power and/or gas to the water heater. Unplug your water heater from the power source. With a gas water heater, turn the gas control dial to “off.” If you have an electric heater, turn off the power at the main panel.

Step 3:

Next, turn the cold water supply valve off that allows water to flow into the heater. This valve will be located on the top of the water tank. Then turn on the hot water at any faucet to release the pressure inside the heater’s tank. Leave the faucet on until you finish your work.

Step 4:

Hook up a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the heater and run it to a floor drain or you can use a bucket. Then open the drain valve where the hose is attached. Don’t worry about any gurgling or groaning noises coming from the heater, it’s just air entering the system as water drains out.

Allow the water in the heater to drain out. This should take around 20 to 40 minutes depending on how small or large the hot water heater is. When the heater is empty, open the cold water valve for a few minutes to flush out the remaining sediment. Always let the water flow until you no longer see particles in the bucket.

Step 5:

Now that the tank is drained and cleaned of sediments disconnect your garden hose and close the drain valve. Close the pressure relief valve and open cold water valve. Allow the tank to fill back up. You will know when your tank is full when hot water starts to run at the faucet that was left open to purge air from the system. Don’t worry about any gurgling or groaning noises coming from the heater or the faucet it’s just air exiting the system as water tank becomes full. Once full shut the faucet.

Relight the pilot to the water heater if gas, and turn on. If electric, turn the breaker on to restore power to the water heater.
