DIY Repurpose Bookcase Makeover-Don of all Trades

DIY Repurpose Bookcase Makeover-Don of all Trades

Here is a classic example that we are all familiar with. You’ve had that bookcase that no longer fits in your living area, or it may be damaged with perhaps some shelving that is in need of repair.

You may be thinking that its time to trash it by posting an ad on Kijiji, hauling it into the basement or maybe just placing it out on your curb in the hopes that it will disappear. Why not consider the option of repurposing it?

Repurposing is the process by which an object with one use value is transformed or redeployed as an object with an alternative use value.

E.g.  Bedside storage is a necessity for books, electronic devices, boxes of tissues, and other essentials. Given such a long list of must-haves, the ample storage afforded by an old bookcase makes it ripe for repurposing into a nightstand.

Deck out an old bookcase (or a recent find) with a fresh coat of paint and some patterned contact paper, then attach a quartet of modern legs to add height and complete the transformation.

There’s countless ideas for repurposing your furniture pieces and other household good and bookcases are just the beginning!  With hardly any effort and lot of imagination you can repurpose that unwanted bookcase and turn it into something beautiful!

Below is one of our own  projects we completed  by taking an older T.V. Entertainment Unit and repurposing the shelving that once upon a time, used to hold books, children’s dvd’s, vhs tapes and family photo albums now transformed into a new one of a kind storage space to now  hold  supplies for our new office coffee station with the addition of some personal touches. Hope this inspires you to try  some of your own DIY Repurposing projects around your home or office. The possibilities are endless!

Step 1

We gave these 2 book cases a quick inspection, looking for any damaged areas that needed repair and disassembled the shelving.  Both pieces got a thorough cleaning to remove any dirt and grime built up from over the years. This would help ensure that paint will adhere properly.

Step 2

We’re no strangers to Cottage  Serenity Brand Paints.  If you’ve read our previous blogs and viewed some of the other DIY projects we’ve completed in the past, you’ll  see for yourself what a great product and premium paint this really is and here’s why:

When you’re not looking for that vintage look and simply want to paint your furniture to give it a fresh new appearance, Serenity is a mineral paint that goes on clean and evenly with no extra work. Simply prep your surface, then paint. No top coat is required.

Serenity is formulated with top quality acrylic and urethane resins that cure to become a very durable surface. Serenity is available in a soft silky-smooth finish or a velvety flat finish.

There is NO sanding and NO priming required if the surface is cleaned, sealed and sound. When painting with Serenity paint, the surface dries with a built-in sealer. There is no need to worry about any additional waxes or varnishes. It’s as easy as that.

We gave our shelving pieces 2 coats of  Cottage Paint Serenity Brand in Charcoal Grey with dry time in between each coat and set them to the side.

Step 3

Painting both inside and outside of these bookcases was shall we say… “interesting.” These units needed 2 coats of paint to cover the existing colour with dry time in between coats however, we loved the way these pieces were coming together!

Wow what a transformation already! Loving it!

We now have 2 brand new looking book shelves that were originally part of a 3 piece older TV Entertainment Unit from back in the day.

We gave these 2 older bookshelves a new purpose and meaning in our home office and decided to to put them to good  use  by incorporating both pieces as part of our office coffee station area.  They both have a ton of useful storage space.

It’s really is a wonderful feeling to take something you already have in your home and transform that piece into something new and give a new purpose.

Step 4

This was the fun part! By taking these two older bookcases and re-purposing them, we now have created something completely new with a great story to tell and we’ve don it ourselves!  We have now created a home for our items that  has a unique look like no other.

Step 5

To finish this project off, we added some of our own personal touches by installing some curtain rods and sheers we already had around from a previous window treatment upgrade project. Silk orange sunflower heads with clips were added to each end of the curtain hold back hardware to help give these pieces just a little splash of colour and cheerfulness.   Love the new look!

Painting furniture is a great approach to make it more personal. If you are thinking about up-cycling your furniture,  this article from our latest DIY Weekend Projects with Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services will help explain how.

With regards to giving your home a face lift, the difference is all in the details. Painting tired furniture is one of the quickest and most cost effective  approaches to revive a room’s stylistic theme.

This bedroom needed some TLC and we wanted to give it a new fresh cleaner look.  We had to first start by  decluttering, organizing  cleaning, prepping the walls and then painting the room.

Outdated window treatments were replaced along with the original large pine wood bed with with a newer sleeker basic iron headboard. New mattress and box spring were purchased as well.  The only original bedroom furniture left in this room was the was the dresser.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with this dresser except cosmetically,  it didn’t fit in with the planned updated decor and style  we wanted to achieve in this room.

We decided to up-cycle this dresser and give it a face-lift with some chalk paint. And let me tell you….ARE WE EVER GLAD WE DID!

Below are some before and after photos of this dresser up cycling project including steps, tips and our experiences completing it. We hope that this article  inspires you to create something new  and unique as a DIY project for your home.

Step 1-Surface Preparation-Before You Paint

  • Remove any removable elements like hardware, shelves, drawers.
  • Run your hand across the piece to find any rough patches that might need sanding (but you do NOT need to sand the entire piece when using Chalk Paint–even if it’s varnished!).
  • Fill any holes with wood glue.
  • Even if your furniture piece appears to be clean, it will still be covered in oils from hands.  So, make sure to give it a once over with some warm soapy water.  we just used a mild dish-soap, followed up with a final pass of clear water, so we didn’t leave behind any soapy residue.  Then, just allow ample dry time before applying your first coat of paint.
  • Edge off any sections that won’t be painted using painter’s tape (like the inside of drawers).

Step 2-Choosing Your Brand of  Decorative Chalk Paint

For this particular project, we purchased the Rust-Oleum Brand-Chalked Ultra Matt in Linen White. Ultra Matte Paint creates a matte finish that dries to a velvety smooth finish. It transforms and rejuvenates furniture and home décor, creating a unique one of a kind look.

Product Overview
  • Easy to use – No prepping or priming required
  • Use on wood, metal, ceramic, canvas and more
  • Water based for easy clean up

Step 3-  Our Brush of Choice-The Nour Craft 1 ½ inch Premium Oval Brush

The 1.5 inch (37mm) Premium Oval Brush is a professional polyester brush for use with all paints and wax. This brush is ideal for spreading wax because of the density and firmness of the filaments and is best suited for application on medium-sized objects. In addition, the oval shape provides greater coverage.

Product Overview

  • Dyed, tipped and flagged polyester filaments
  • High density of filaments (increased paint pick-up & release)
  • Fine tips for smooth finish
  • Firm stiffness (excellent for wax application)
  • Oval Handle
  • Oval Brush

Good To Know Tip-How To Apply a Chalk Finish Paint

Practice painting a scrap board before tackling a project. When layering different paint colors for a distressed finish, apply a heavier base coat than top coat. Work quickly — chalk-finish paint dries fast  and immediately remove any particles in the wet paint.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Good To Know Tip-When Chalk Paint Becomes Too Thick…

When applying the chalk paint, we found after time the paint got thick and we ran into problems with unevenness on how the paint laid down on the wood. This was a concern because this dresser got very streaked with brush lines and we were disappointed on how this project was turning out so far.
In this case we corrected this issue by using a damp sponge and carefully smoothed out the imperfections after a few hours.
We recommend separating a portion of the paint to be used and thinning the paint by simply adding a little water to it.
Note: When painting make sure room temperature is not to cold because it enhanced the streaking problem.
We then realized that it would most likely  take two to three coats of chalk paint to finish this job.
It’s a really good product if you know what to expect……like all good things in life it takes a little time and effort but in the end you will have a beautiful piece of
furniture.

Step 5-Adding a Protective Top Coat

Since this piece was still being used as a dresser, we chose the Rust-oleum Brand Chalked Protective Top Coat  to add an extra protection against any possible spills or accidents.

Rust-Oleum Chalked Protective Topcoat

Product Overview:

  • Adds a protective, sealed clear topcoat to any chalked surface
  • Ultra-matte, smooth finish enhances color and durability
  • Goes on in 1 to 2 coats with no need to reapply

We found that this product worked like it said it would. This is a good sealer for the chalked paint. We also wanted to mention that this product  does darken the colors a bit.

Absolutely Love the new look this older dresser now gives in this bedroom!
Well this DIY up-cycling dresser project was a lot of fun and and a great learning experience to complete. Ok, so it 4 coats of chalk paint and a little bit of patience to achieve the look we wanted but we are so happy  we made the effort.  We absolutely love the results and the new fresh clean look it adds to this bedroom. Best of all-it was an affordable alternative!

Three More Reasons Why You Should Consider Up Cycling

Number 1-Saves You Money

The number 1 reason for choosing  to upcycle furniture is clearly that it saves you money. We live in a throw- away generation whereby individuals rush to simply throw away undesirable things; the perfect opportunity to get your hands on something to give a makeover!

Number 2-Customize

Why purchase new when you can make something totally customized for your home? No one else will have the same and you can give your creative  imagination and energy a chance to run wild.

Number 3-Good for the Environment

It’s good for the environment –Instead of trashing unwanted pieces consider recycling them as something else and turning them into something you love is the way to go. Landfills are  wrecking havoc with our environment so next time you make a trip to dump, think “can I re-purpose this?”

Repairing Your Entrance Way Stairs & Landing-Don of all Trades

Another  home improvement  project checked off the TO-DO-LIST with Don of All Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services.

It’s amazing how some paint has completely changed the look of this entrance way, stairs and landing area. The original railing was in need of repair.

A new stair newel post, new top rail and mounting hardware was installed.

Instead of replacing the stairs with new ones, broken steps were repaired, finished grade plywood was installed to eliminate creaking and to help add more strength to the steps.

Steps were painted with 2 coats of a charcoal shade and finished off with 2 coats of water based varnish satin coat with Serenity Brand Cottage Paint which was purchased at the Benjamin Moore Whitby Shores Decor Centre.

Although making the decision of trying something completely different by painting these steps a dark color was a difficult one, this client was extremely pleased at how they came out.

Walls were patched and sanded. Even the front hallway closest got fresh coat of paint inside and out. Walls were painted in a shade of grey, all ceilings and trim were painted in a white.

All this area needs now is some personal touches like adding picture frames and new lighting fixtures to complete the look of this space.

Get Your Home Organized With These 4 Spring Cleaning Tips-Don of all Trades

It’s Time to Get Your Home Organized

Spring is the time of year when everything in nature is changing and promising new life and new hope.  After the long, dark, winter months, spring is literally a breath of fresh air. It’s no wonder we get inspired to carry the freshness of this season into our homes. Spring cleaning is the perfect way to get organized and make your home as lovely as the season itself. Finding the right solution for organizing your home can make such a difference in the appearance and functionality of your home. Below are 4 organizing solutions that can help you clean, organize and rejuvenate you home.

SAY GOOD BYE TO CLUTTER

The decluttering process, for some people, can be on the most stressful first steps in the process organization because they are unsure of where to start and what to get rid of. RELAX AND BREATHE.  Just take it ONE ROOM at a time. There’s no need to worry about trying to get the entire house done it one day. It’s better to take your time and get it all done right then to rush through the process and to end up with unnecessary clutter in your home. This is one of the most important steps in getting organized because it will free up so much extra space in your home. So how do you decide of what to get rid of?  A good rule of thumb is to keep this in mind to go by is this :IF YOU DON’T LOVE IT AND YOU DON’T USE IT, THEN IT’S CLUTTER!  Don’t be afraid to get merciless with this process. The more you declutter the less you will have to clean and the more balanced both mentally and physically your life will be. Discarding and recycling unwanted items will give you so much more space to get neat and organized.

GET STORAGE SAVVY

One of the biggest reasons our homes get out of control with clutter is because we do not have designated places for all our items.  Giving your items a “home” is the best way to get organized and keep it that way. Choosing storage solutions like affordable plastic containers are fantastic because they come in a variety of shapes and sizes.  Wide flat containers are an excellent choice to be used for storing seasonal clothing under a bed. Stack containers in closets for storing shoes and accessories. Use smaller containers to organize the contents in drawers such as pens, note pads, small toys, etc.  Grab a few glass jars and chalk and you now have an adorable way to organize your kitchen pantry. Finally, use hooks wherever needed. Hooks are great in closets to house jewelry and are also perfect in laundry rooms for hanging brooms, mops and ironing boards.

NEVER UNDERVALUE THE POWER OF A SHELF

Consider adding shelves as this is a great way to provide storage in just about any room. Consider the option of using decorative shelving with hooks and pegs in your kitchen for storing mugs, pots and pans or cooking utensils. Add some shelving to a living room to make extra space for books, pictures and other decorative items. And don’t forget that closets could always use a little more space for storage. By simply adding shelving to closets, there is now a designated space to make room for those bulky sweaters, bags, shoes and other personal items.

GLITZ UP THE GARAGE

At times we get so caught up in looking after organizing the inside of the home at we neglect the outside like the garage for example. The garage doesn’t have to be a designated space for parking only. Putting in the time and effort to organize your garage will open up so much great valuable space for storage. Utilize the same concept of organizing the inside of your home for your garage space as well.  Decluttering, using labeled containers, and adding hooks and shelving can turn a garage into a perfectly organized storage space.  Use hooks for hanging jackets, bags, and muddy boots.

It’s time to get organized and there is no better time than spring.  If you follow these helpful tips, your home will feel as fresh as this beautiful spring weather.  You will be ready to sit back, sip some lemonade, and enjoy the season.

New Year’s Resolution- Getting Your Basement Organized

Photos provided by Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Utilizing your basement as a storage area can be difficult as the space can quickly become cluttered and unorganized. You can make storage more efficient by creating an organized system for your items. While plastic storage bins are great for holding your stuff, when they pile up, it becomes difficult to get to the bottom bin without moving the rest in the stack. To solve this problem, create a storage organizer that will give easy access to all of them.

If your basement is on your list of New Years Resolutions here’s a recent project Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services completed to help tackle these home owners issues by creating more storage space.

Photos provided by Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

These homeowners had a bit of a challenge searching for a shelving unit that would fit their older home’s basement low ceilings. After doing some research on-line they found an IkeaHejne 4 section shelving unit that was a perfect solution to their needs and within their budget. Modifications were made with the shelving in order to house larger items that did not fit with the original design. The next issue was how to come up with a solution to enclose this piece so that our clients wouldn’t actually see what was inside and to give it more character. Shower Curtains, Venetian Blinds and Curtain Panels with Grommets were just some of the idea options our clients offered.

Photos provided by Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services

Our team asked if they would consider closing this shelving off with doors. They loved the idea and we moved forward with the project. We came up with a plan to design doors made from finished grade plywood and completing the look by adding cabinet door hinges and contemporary metal handle hardware. The results were fantastic!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

By adding custom-built doors, we have now created the perfect storage organizer unit by closing off these open shelves so that these home owners don’t have to live with the cluttered look.

DIY Project-How To Create A Memory Wall-Don of all Trades

http://www.donofalltrades.ca

There is nothing more exciting than transforming  a space in your home from plain old ordinary to something beautiful, unique and extraordinary.  If your walls could tell a story what would that story be? Below is a recent project Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services  completed from start to finish. We have to say that  our team but most importantly our client,  loved the results!

We took this small plain hallway, landing and staircase to the next level by adding special personal touches and turned it into a Memory Wall that will be enjoyed for years to come.  We hope this project will give you some insight and inspiration if you are considering  DIY Memory Wall of your own in your home.

Good to know tip…

You have to start with a perfectly smooth surface to end up with perfectly painted walls or woodwork.

Step 1-Surface Preparation-Before You Paint
  • Remove any removable elements like railings, door handles, light fixtures, picture frames and so on.
  • Even if your steps, railings,  walls, ceilings, trim, doors and baseboards  appear to be clean, it will still be covered in dirt, grime and oils from hands.  So, make sure to give it a once over with some warm soapy water.  we just used a mild dish-soap, followed up with a final pass of clear water, so we didn’t leave behind any soapy residue.  Then, just allow ample dry time before applying your first coat of paint.
  • Have a good look at the conditions of your walls and ceilings to find any rough patches,  holes or damage  that might need re patching,  sanding and repair accordingly.
Step 2-Make Any Necessary Repairs

The original railing was in need of repair. A new stair newel post, new top rail and mounting hardware was installed. Instead of replacing the stairs with new ones, broken steps were repaired, finished grade plywood was installed to eliminate creaking and to help add more strength to the steps.

Good to know tip…

Are the walls in your home in need of a fresh coat but not sure what color to choose?   Talk  with the paint experts to find out what colors are trending in 2018.

Step 3 – Selecting the Right Paint and Varnish

The steps were painted with 2 coats of a Charcoal Shade and finished off with 2 coats of water based varnish satin coat with #Serenity brand #Cottagepaint which was purchased at the Benjamin Moore Whitby Shores Decor Centre.

Good to know tip…

Remember that stairways and halls must have good general lighting for safety. To prevent accidents, stairs should be lit from top to bottom with switches in both places. For safety in hallways, place lighting fixtures every 8 to 10 feet (2.4 to 3.0 m). Tie in the fixtures you choose by matching your foyer chandelier or pendant with close-to-ceiling fixtures for hallways and smaller chain hung fixtures for stairways.

Step  4 – Choosing Light Fixtures

The original outdated lighting was replaced with  more modern energy efficient  Hampton Bay 12 inch brushed nickel led flush-mount light fixtures.  These ceiling light fixtures are engineered to save you money, and they are designed to look great. This collection is a modern, elegant style featuring a brushed nickel finish and frosted glass shade that diffuses the light so that there are no shadows or dark spots. These ceiling lights are built with steel to look great and save you money for many years while blending nicely with the decor of your home.

Good to know…

Applying a wall decal can be a quick and easy way to add a new style to any room or space.

Step  5 – Choosing The Right Words To Tell A Story

We did some research on line and found a great website that offered a huge variety of non-permanent  beautiful wall lettering  quotes that was delivered right to their door.  Measurements were made prior to making an order to ensure it would fit the space on the wall it was going to be applied to.   Our client chose the  MagicWall Family Memories Wall Lettering  in colour-black-48×13 inches (122 x 33 cm) size to help tell their family’s story.  This beautiful wall quote was super easy to apply and was applied to the right side of the wall above the hand railing.

Good to know…

One of the most common reasons people develop their photos in black and white today is because it lends a certain timeless quality to the images.

Step 6 –  Memories With Meaning

These photos helped tell the story of what is important to our client.  This special project was completed  to create a space to tell a story ranging from important moments from the the past to present.

Special moments of youth, dating, marriage,  birthdays, holidays, friends and family members, home, pets and children growing up.  A total of 40 photos were developed online through  Wal-Mart Photo Centre.  All photos were reprinted  in 8×10 sizes (at a very reasonable price) on the wal-mart photo centre website in black in white to keep the theme the same and to give them all a timeless quality to the images.

A total of 40  Nikolai 8 x 10″ Black photo frames were purchased on the Walmart.ca  website (again at a very reasonable price) and were conveniently shipped to our clients door within 4 days of ordering.  To help keep the damage to the walls to a minimum, Command Brand Damage-Free Picture Hanging Strips were used to hang all photos.  These strips were a perfect solution to prevent filling in 40 nail holes in the walls later on in the future.

These walls will be telling this client’s story for years to come and will be enjoyed by neighbors, friends and family members who come to visit. We are extremely pleased at the results,  the story and special meaning  this Memory Wall tells. It’s quite simply “Beautiful.”

It is these three goals that form the foundation for the Don of All Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services business model, which is unique from the way that other home improvement companies operate. Our clients have told us the benefits they’ve seen from our business model.

Don’s Motto

“Start living better and get peace of mind and the freedom in life to get back to the important things that matters most to you.”

Don Continues to Find Compassion Within Himself to Stay Attached to Values That are Linked to the Common Good

In 2013 Don and and his team created the Helping Hands Building Trees of Hope Program benefiting worthwhile causes and creating partnerships within our communities in Durham Region. The Tree of Hope is a symbol of commitment, inspiration and community. Every year Don’s goal is to add new Helping Hands to the Tree of Hope and have it completed by December 31st from generous donations collected from clients, friends, family and local businesses in the community from our Donation Wish-List. Don believes it’s important to give back and not only volunteers his time, he also funds and hosts a number events throughout the year to help Do Good and Give Back.

Here’s an important life lesson: no matter how tough you think your life is there’s always someone who has to face challenges that are tougher than yours.

DIY Weekend Projects-Turning An Old Dresser Into A Coffee Station -Don of all Trades

Our office was in desperate need of a new piece of furniture that was going to act as coffee station but also function as extra  storage space.  One of our team members here at Don of all Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services who also  happens to be a member of the Facebook BLACK MARKET – VarageSale site, found this old solid wooden dresser and got it for a steal  at just $50!  As a fast, economical way to breathe new life into this old piece, we  gave it 3 coats of chalk paint and we absolutely love the results.  Thinking of  up-cycling your tired furniture with paint and colour? Follow these easy DIY instructions for how to prep and paint wood furniture with beautiful results in just 1 weekend.

Surface Preparation-Before You Paint

Chalk Paint-Our Choice for This Project

So what exactly is chalk paint? Chalky-finish paint is a latex-based paint to which a fine granular powder has been added—often Plaster of Paris. After the paint dries, the granules create a matte finish. Brush strokes and imperfections become part of the look, making it a forgiving finish to apply. The finish can be sanded in places to create a distressed look or waxed for either an aged look or more satin finish than paint alone.

We’ve used this Rust-Oleum® Chalked Ultra Matte Paint in Linen White  product on a previous project in the past and loved the results.

A little more info about Chalked Ultra Matte Paint

Best Paint Brush for Chalk Paint

The brush that you choose is super important, as it will affect the way your paint goes on. Our favorite brushes to use are the Nour Craft 1 1/2 inch Premium Oval Brush. Keep in mind that chalk paint does show brush strokes, which is part of it’s charm, but that also means that you want to keep your brush strokes going in the same direction.  It really helps if you’re painting a wood piece because you can just follow the grain of the wood.  When you’re finished painting, you can clean your brushes with warm water and a mild soap.

Nour Craft 1 1/2 inch Premium Oval Brush.

Product Overview:

  • Dyed, tipped and flagged polyester filaments
  • High density of filaments (increased paint pick-up & release)
  • Fine tips for smooth finish
  • Firm stiffness (excellent for wax application)
  • Oval Handle
  • Oval Brush

Good to know Tip-How To Apply a Chalk Finish Paint

Practice painting a scrap board before tackling a project. When layering different paint colors for a distressed finish, apply a heavier base coat than top coat. Work quickly — chalk-finish paint dries fast  and immediately remove any particles in the wet paint.

Our First Coat of Chalk Finish Paint Applied

Good To Know TipADD A LITTLE WATER

As mentioned above, Rust-Oleum® Chalked Ultra Matte Paint  is quite thick, and it’s meant to show brush strokes.  We found  that by  adding a little water to our paint makes the brush strokes a little less noticeable and makes the paint go further.  If you’re going to add water, we would recommend putting a little paint in another container and adding small amounts of water at a time until you have reached your desired consistency.  Also, if you’re painting from the can and the lid is left off for a good amount of time, the paint can thicken even more.  In this case you can simply add a little water to the can and shake it up. Dry time was 1 hour before applying the second coat of chalk paint to this piece.

Third and Final Chalk Finish Paint Coat Applied

Day number 2 was extremely exciting for us as this was the moment were we got a good opportunity to appreciate the benefits of painting this piece with chalk paint. Considering this was a second hand piece that the previous owner had for years, this dresser was in truly good shape.

Adding a Protective Top Coat

Since this piece was being used as a coffee station, we chose the Rust-oleum Chalked Protective Top Coat Brand to add extra protection against any spills or accidents. We found that this product worked like it said it would. This is a good sealer for the chalked paint. We also wanted to mention that this product  does darken the colors a bit.  Over all, we are  very happy with the results.

 Painting the Hardware

So we decided to give the drawer hardware a new look by giving them a light sanding and applying  Rust-Oleum®  Brand Spray paint specifically designed for metal surfaces to help give them a new look and to add a little more character to the dresser drawers. Once dry, we added them to the drawers and we have to say our new coffee station is looking good!

Finished Product

Our DIY Weekend Project-Turning An Old Dresser Into A Coffee Station  is finally finished and ready to enjoy! It looks fantastic and we look forward to finding more great deals out there on line to work on in the future. Perhaps the  single most beneficial aspect of chalk painting furniture is that it requires almost no prep work and no priming.  Another plus is that you don’t have to be a perfect painter to do this. In fact, you are SUPPOSED to do criss-cross brush strokes and not straight lines.  Anyone can do this!
