Useful Hiring Tips

Check out some of these tips below BEFORE you hire someone to do your project:

1- Google Search.  Look up a variety of Handyman Services and Contractors in your area on the internet and popular social media sites like face book, twitter and pintrest.

2- Questions & Concerns.  Ask lots of question! There’s no such thing as a “bad” question. The more you ask, the better!

3-  Quotes & Estimates. Ask for quotes, the more the better but be leery, sometimes “cheapest” doesn’t always mean better.

4- Are they legit?  Find out if the company is legitimate. Are they a  registered company?

5-Are they insured?  Does this company have insurance? Find out. Again, ask the question.

6- Ask to see their work. Ask for a portfolio to show you some of their work. In this particular industry, photo’s tell the truth. This is what they have to offer as a source to prove what kind of projects they have done. Ask   for   before and after pictures.  Anyone can copy a photo off the internet but is their work legitimate?

7- Ask for testimonials. Previous satisfied clients will have no issues giving a positive testimonial of their own completed projects. Why would they? They will want to share this information and let others know what a great job this company has done and would definitely recommend them. Of Course, testimonials will also warn other potential clients “not” to use their services either from their own bad experiences. So either way, you can get some piece of mind.

8- Look at company websites. See their work. A lot of them are on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn , Word Press, exc.  You can get a sense of who they are, what they do, latest specials and events, how they connect with their clients and how these companies are involved in your community!

9- First Impressions.   Company representatives are an example of their work and the company they own or work for. Representatives that come to your home for a quote, should be experienced, organized  knowledgeable in the field of the business, polite, well-groomed,  answer your questions and concerns and make you feel confident and comfortable.  Trust your instincts. They’re always right.

10- References. Ask your handyman about his work experience, and his former clients. If he has a successful business doing odd jobs, he’ll most likely have a list of clients. You should call at least a few of these clients to get a good sense of his work ethic and the quality of his work.

High Humidity In Bathrooms

Significance Of Bathroom Ventilation

Bathroom fans are essential in today’s designs of air tight and energy-efficient homes and assist in the prevention of humidity issues.   Proper ventilation is important  when it comes to the  overall health of the homeowner and assist in the structural integrity if the home.

Presence of health hazards

The biggest problem with bathrooms is the high humidity level. Humidity is simply the amount of water vapor in the air. Warm air holds more humidity than cold air. These may be adversely affected in the bathroom by the presence of microbial hazards that grow in damp and dark areas, such as poorly designed bathrooms.

Bathroom Exhaust Fans

For bigger bathrooms it is recommended to have a bathroom fan, which is an exhaust fan that pulls excess moisture away from the  interior to be vented outside the building. In this way, the humidity and moisture inside the bathroom reduce the risk of growth of mold. However, be sure to check that the bathroom fan is strong enough to pull moisture outside the bathroom, and a simple way to test this is by holding up a tissue to the fan. If the tissue falls down, the fan is not strong enough.

Structural Damage

Moisture vapor can peel wallpaper or paint off the surfaces and encourage the growth of mildew and mold. Moist air can condense inside the wall cavity, where it can cause rot, mold and serious structural damage to wall studs, sheathing, and ceiling and floor joists above and around the bathroom.

 Timer Switches

timer switch

Ventilate and control all fans with timer switches.  In my professional opinion,  the best  and most cost-effective way to remove humid air from showering is to replace your light / fan switch with an automatic timer switch.  It’s designed so that the fan goes on when you set the timer, then shuts off when the time runs out.

Using a timer switch allows you to remove humidity for up to 30  minutes  or more depending on the model after you leave the room, without the worry of forgetting to turn the fan off.

Like so many  home owners out there, there comes point in  when you may be considering ways to add spark  and life back in your home. Remodeling can help bring out the much-needed changes to your current living conditions. Putting your home on the market, selling and moving somewhere new may be one solution but why bother with all of the hassle? Adding just a few things to your home can help give it life  and make it feel new again. Keep in mind something very important  before you start your home remodel –Have Every Thing On Hand First.

Large  items such as the vanity tops  and special order tiles can take several weeks to arrive, so be patient. Before you take a sledge-hammer to your bathroom, make sure everything you’re going to need — including the vanity, plumbing fixtures, any new lighting, the tub and the tile is on hand. You might get frustrated waiting around for products, but it’s better than tearing up your fixtures and having an unusable bathroom until they arrive. Plus, when your new products are on hand, you’ll know if you need to do extra work, such as moving the plumbing lines for the sink location or running new cable for your lights, before you rip up and then patch the walls.

Below is an example on one of Don Of All Trades Professional Home Maintenance Services recent corner shower tiling upgrades and a description of the work that was done. Enjoy!

So here’s what we did:

– Installation of ceramic tile.

– Partial installation of Backer Board.

– Dry Pack for the floor which consisted of a  mixture of sand and Portland cement.

–  Configuring sloping of the shower floor to ensure proper drainage.

– Installed 8×10 ceramic tile on all walls.

– Glass inlay installation.

– 12×12 sheet of 1 inch tile for the shower floor.

– Grouted tiles with sanded grout with polymer to give it strength and prevention of mold & mildew.

– Vinyl tile edging installed to the shower opening to it a clean and finished look.

Tips:

If your thinking about building a  shower, consider the design. Odd shaped designs take longer to tile due to the fact there are more measurements involved in order to get the tile to fit correctly. Plan accordingly in order to fit this into your project time line  completion.

Home Maintenance Tips for: Cleaning Bathroom Exhaust Fans

Have you ever turned on your bathroom exhaust fan to hear it suddenly make a strange squeaking sound or maybe even stop working completely? Chances are the motor to your unit  may just need a simple cleaning.  These units should be put on a maintenance cleaning schedule about every three-month as they do get quite dirty and dusty inside. Regular cleaning extends the life of the motor inside the unit and keeps it working properly.

Exhaust fans unit play an important role in all bathrooms as they:

1- keep your walls dampness to a minimum to prevent damage to the drywall and to circulate the air

2- prevents and keeps mold growth to a minimum since bathrooms are usually a higher moisture and humidity content than any other room in the home especially after hot baths and showers

3- provide an escape route usually for strong offensive odours

Below are simple cleaning instructions to assist you if you are planning on doing it yourself!

Depending on how long it’s been since the last time you cleaned your bathroom exhaust fan, now is the time to pull out the vacuum cleaner before removing the cover. You will save yourself from a great deal of dust falling on to your bathroom floor if you vacuum the bulk of the dust off before you remove the cover.

Start by choosing the brush attachment and begin by gently removing the accumulation of cobwebs and dust that has collected substantially over time.

If your plan is  just doing an ‘in between clean’ of your  fan cover once every couple of months, you can stop here and not worry about doing a detailed clean of the cover and fan.

Once you have vacuumed up as many dust bunnies as you could manage, make sure someone who knows what they are doing has turned the bathroom power off at the mains, then put on some gloves, climb carefully up your ladder and pull off the fan cover. Most will come off fairly easily, but some may need screws removed with a screwdriver.

Choose a  quality cloth to ensure you don’t just spread the grime and wipe off as much surface dust as you can, taking care not to damage or pull on the fan.

Next, take the fan cover, spray with an all-purpose cleaner and give it a once over with a small scrubbing-brush. If the ingrained dirt doesn’t seem to be releasing after this, give the cover a soak for a few minutes in some warm water to loosen the dirt and try again.

Once everything is clean and dry, put it all back together and enjoy knowing that your  bathroom exhaust is now working at peak efficiency and will continue to operate for years to come!
